"On the day of the battle, during the hardest fighting at Bloody Lane, a man with a two horse spring wagon came to the Roulette farm and drove nearly to where the tower stands and gave to a number of the Union soldiers, bread, ham, cakes and pies that had been sent by some good ladies, but no one to-day knows who he was or where he came from. In 1910, the War Department made an effort, through Gen. Ezra A. Carman, who was the head of the Antietam Battlefield Commission, to locate him; the country papers were used to find out who he was, but with no success. The War Department's aim was to reward him with a medal for his bravery in coming on the field when the bullets were flying fast." O. T. Barton — BARTON — Dale F. Rounds, 68, of 18930 High St., Barton, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born Sept. 14, 1941, in Barton, he was the son of the late Frederick N. and Violet L. (Broadwater) Rounds. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James Joseph and Gertrude M. Butts, of McCoole.
Mr. Rounds was a United States Army veteran. He retired from Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, with 34 years of service, having worked in maintenance. He was a member of Barton Presbyterian Church, a member of Loyal Order of Moose 348, Frostburg, and a member of Frostburg Farrady Post 24 American Legion.
He leaves behind his wife, "Peachie" (Butts) Rounds; two sons, Frederick Dale Rounds and wife Shanda, of Barton, and Timothy Ray Rounds and wife Melissa, of Charleston, W.Va; four grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye, Camryn Lynn, Sasha Joelle, Madison Marie, and Sophie Grace Rounds. He is also survived by two sisters, Shirley Custer, of Barton, and Sandra Wallbaum, of Georgia; his special friends, Bob and Annie Elliott, of Barton, and Mike and Karen Benson, of Ridgeley, W.Va., and many nieces; nephews; aunts, and uncles.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted in Barton Presbyterian Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Morgan and the Rev. James Jeffries officiating. Mr. Rounds will be taken to church one hour prior to service.
Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
He was buried in July 2010 at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, La Vale, Allegany Co., MD, Findagrave #84643309.

Born August 5, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Violet and Fred Rounds. She was also preceded in death by her mother and father-in-law, Charles and Ollie Custer; and her brother, Dale Rounds.
Shirley was a 1960 graduate of Valley High School. Shirley was a member of the Barton United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Barton American Legion #189 Auxiliary, where she held the title of President for many years and held other various offices within the organization. She worked and retired from the Allegany County Board of Education. At one time Shirley was a phlebotomist and worked at J & M Restaurant, located in Barton.
Shirley was an avid sports fan. She really enjoyed watching all sports but she was especially fond of the Baltimore Ravens, the Washington Redskins and NASCAR driver Tony Stewart. Shirley loved college basketball and cheered on several teams.
She loved line dancing, adventures on bus trips, going to casinos and being outdoors while camping. Ocean City Maryland was one of her favorite places, she took a trip there every year. Shirley had many friends and she never met a stranger. She loved her family more than anything and she will be missed by many.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Charles “Bugs” Custer of Barton; her sister, Sandra Wallbaum of Georgia; her sons, Geoffrey Goodrich and wife, Lois of Street, MD and Chad Custer of Hagerstown, MD. Shirley is also survived by her special grandson that she was raising, Lucas Sevy-Custer; her grandchildren, Geoffrey Goodrich, Brittiany Goodrich, Chelsea Goodrich Hall; two great grandsons; sister-in-law, Peachie Rounds; numerous nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Linda Raines and her loving companion, Patches.
Shirley was always a giving person and her giving spirit continued in death. Per her wishes, Shirley’s body was donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board, and there will be no services.
She was buried in November 2020, Body donated to Medical Science, Maryland Anatomy Board, Findagrave #219071225.
