John Strong Triem died on 6 August 2008 at Cherry Hill, Camden Co., NJ, at age 92 Obituary:

JOHN STRONG TRIEM, died peacefully in his sleep at his daughter's home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, on August 6, 2008. He was born to Vivian Strong and William Triem on April 3, 1916 in Delaware, Ohio and attended high school at the Greenbrier Military Academy in Lewisburg, West Virginia, where he graduated in 1933. He graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University) in 1938. Upon graduation, he began a lifetime career for the Navy Department designing aircraft carriers and accessory equipment. Except for a brief assignment to private aircraft engineering during the Korean War, he spent his entire career as a civilian engineer in the Navy Department, first at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia in 1939-1940, then at the Main Navy Building in Washington, D.C., until 1956, and then at the National Air Development Center in Johnsville, Pennsylvania, until his retirement in 1970. During World War II and the Korean War, John's principal activity was designing arresting gear for aircraft carriers, and his most important professional achievement was his design of the canted deck for use on aircraft carriers which allowed planes that missed the arresting gear to take off again instead of colliding with parked planes in the forward deck area. During the Vietnam War, John participated in a project in which sound detection devices were dropped by parachute along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. These stealthy microphones picked up the noise of Viet Cong truck traffic and transmitted it back to allied receivers, thus allowing the U.S. to sever enemy transport lines and the timely destruction of enemy war supplies. After his retirement he founded Triem Engineering Services, a private consulting firm, where he continued to work until the 1980's. He spent the last thirty-three years in Margate, New Jersey. John was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Helen Egli of Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, and by his second wife, Doris Ilene Jacob of Louisville, Ohio. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and George Norcross of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; by his son and daughter-in-law Fred W. Triem and Karen Ellingstad of Petersburg, Alaska; by his sister and brother-in-law, Prudence and Frederick Woodward of Lake City, Michigan, by his brother Daniel W. Triem of Las Vegas, Nevada, and by his four grandchildren, Alessandra and Alexander Norcross of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Kathleen Triem of Ghent, New York; and Carole Triem of Petersburg, Alaska; and by his 3 great grandchildren; 2 nieces; and 4 nephews. Memorial service and interment will be private. The family respectfully request contributions in his memory be made to the First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19103. PLATT MEMORIAL CHAPELS, Inc. Had Been an Invalid for Several Years. Died of Old Age.
Funeral Services Friday Afternoon From Family Home.
LaPorte City, July 21 (Special) Another one of the pioneer residents of this section of Black Hawk County passed to his reward yesterday at 4:15 p.m. in the person of Lewis Triem.
Lewis Triem was born in Germany April 12, 1822. He came to America and to Stark County, Ohio, some eight years later, or in 1830, and remained there and was married in 1844. He continued to live in Stark County for about eight years after his marrieage, when the family moved to Will County, Illinois, where they lived some seventeen years, coming to Iowa in 1869. Upon their arrival in Iowa they bought what was then known as the Reeves farm in the bend of the river some two and one-half miles east of LaPorte City. On this farm they made their home until the year 1888, when they gave up farming and bought residence property in LaPorte City, where they have since made their home.
Mr. Triem's health began failing him before he left the farm and it was on this account that he gave up farming.
Eight children were born to Mr. & Mrs. Triem, four of whom, and the widow and mother, survive as follows:
Mrs. Lewis Triem, Edward E. Triem and Mrs. O. Van Brocklyn of this city, Mrs. Wm. Scheurer of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, who is at present in the city, and Dr. P. E. Triem of Manchester, Iowa, who is at present touring in the state of Washington, besides one brother, Peter Triem, living at Marshalltown, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held from the family home on Bishop's Avenue on Friday, July 22 at 2 p.m., with religious services in both English and German, as the deceased was a member of the German Evangelical church of this city, and the remains will be laid to rest in West View Cemetery.
Mr. Triem was an honorable, upright citizen of German nativity and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all with whom he became acquainted.
