"Alfred Henry, son of Valentine and Elizabeth Bline Rhodes, was born near Strausburg, Virginia, October 22, 1840 an departed this life, Sept. 11, 1928, aged 87 years, 10 months, and 19 days. When a very small boy he moved with his parents, to Newark, Ohio. From there at the age of 17 years, he with his mother and sister came in a one horse covered wagon to the state of Illinois. They first settled on White Prairie, near what is now Bellair.
On February 22, 1863, he was united in marriage to Caroline Newlin. To this union were born eight children, Mary, Katie, Clara, Everett, a daughter who died in infancy, Lawrence, Laura, and Alice. Four, Mary, Katie, Everett, and the infant daughter have preceeded him in death. The surviving children are, Mrs. Clara Hart of Annapolis, Lawrence Rhodes and Mrs. Laura Smith of Eaton, and Mrs. Alice King of Oblong.
He was a member of the Christian church of Porterville, and attended faithfully as long as his health permitted. He was also a member of the Grange Lodge No. 825 and a charter member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge N. 972.
Besides the aged companion and four children he leaves to mourn his departure 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends."1
He was buried in September 1928 at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Porterville, Crawford Co., IL, Findagrave #69969664.
