James Henry Belvel began military service on 12 September 1918 at Leon, Decatur Co., IA, WW I draft registration. He died in 1951. He was buried in 1951 at Evergreen Cemetery, Lineville, Wayne Co., IA.

Belvel began military service WW II, U.S. Army. He married Marita L. Higgason, daughter of James T. Higgason and Blanche M. Vansant, on 12 January 1947 at Greeley, Weld Co., CO. Laures L. Laures Belvel
Laures "Sarge" Belvel, 72, of Greeley died Wednesday, July 20, in Greeley.
He was born Jan. 26, 1922, in Lineville, Iowa to Gilbert and Cecil (Gammel) Belvel.
On Jan. 12, 19447, he married Marita Higgason in Greeley.
Mr. Belvel graduated from Greeley High School in 1941. He entered the U.S. Army in January 1942, where he served in the European Theater and at Normandy on D-Day. He was discharged Dec. 7, 1945. He continued to serve his country in the National Guard, retiring in 1982. He worked for Douglas Roofing as a shop foreman for 20 years and retired 1985. He worked at Warnoco West. His wife works at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion and was a past member of the Elks and the VFW.
Survivors are his wife, Marita Belvel of Greeley; a daughter, Lynn Bell of Las Vegas; a son, Terry, at home; and two granddaughters.

Mary Lou Smith, 69, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, January 11, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids surrounded by her loving family after a 12 year battle with Scleroderma. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, January 15, 2009 at the Cedar Hills Community Church. The service will be conducted by Pastor Kent Landhuis. Visitation will begin after 10:00 AM on Friday at the church. Private inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel.
Surviving are her husband Jerry Smith of Cedar Rapids; her dog Sadie; two children Doug Smith of Cedar Rapids, and Kathy (Robert) Ebeling of Marion; and grandchildren Megan, Spencer, and Tanner Smith, and Michael Ebeling. Also surviving are her sister Nancy (Dennis) Brasel of Muskogee, OK and brother Richard (Lois) Belvel of Biloxi, MS.
She was preceded in death by her son Jeffery Smith and her parents Norma and Bill Belvel.
Mary Lou was born May 23, 1940 in Ottumwa, where she was raised. She was united in marriage to Jerry Smith on April 4, 1958 in Lancaster, MO. She and her husband moved to Cedar Rapids in 2001 to be near their two children and their families. Mary Lou enjoyed volunteering at Milestones and various nursing homes, playing bridge, mah jongg, golfing with friends, and being surrounded by her family.
Mary Lou was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Scleroderma Foundation or to Cedar Hills Community Church in Mary Lou’s honor.
The family extends their appreciation to all of the caring doctors and nurses at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and St. Luke’s Hospital for their tender care and guidance in this time of transition.

Bret D. Bender, 30, of 2433 Nevada Ave., Iowa City, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 9, 2007 in his home. A celebration of Bret's life will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Bret David Bender was born April 20, 1977, at La Cross, Wis., the son of William L. Bender and Joann (Harger) Bender. In 1978 his mother, brother, and sisters moved to Iowa City, where he had resided since.

He graduated from CBC High School in 1995. He was employed as a dispatcher for Marco Cab Co. and was sole proprietor of his own screen printing business, Mind Bender Tees.

Bret loved life, his family and his friends. He enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, hiking, camping, biking, photography, making chain mail jewelry, playing disc golf and playing on the "Preemptive Strike" softball team.

He volunteered at the VA Medical Center and at the Crisis Center helping to clean up after the tornado. He was a unique, creative, sensitive individual,with a kind and beautiful soul.

His family includes his mother, Joann of Iowa City, brother, Scott Bender and his wife, Santwana Dasgupta of Minneapolis, Minn; sisters Sarah and Kathleen Bender of Iowa City; his father and stepmother William and Heidi Bender of Viroqua, Wis; his half siblings, John Buck and Logan and Tara Bender; nephew, Alexander Baker-Bender; grandfather Harold Harger of St. Louis, Mo; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends.

Bret was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bernard and Emma Lou Bender and Pauline Harger.
