Rev. Wilbur B. Stover1

M, b. 5 May 1866
Rev. Wilbur B. Stover was born on 5 May 1866 at Franklin Co., PA.2 He was the son of Rev. Jacob A. Stover and Mary C. Lesher.1 Rev. Wilbur B. Stover married Mary Ellen Emmert, daughter of Rev. John J. Emmert and Catharine Zollers, on 29 June 1893.2 Occupation: Both Mr. and Mrs Stover are graduates of the Brethren College at Mt. Morris, Ill. Their interest in Missionary work grew through a careful study of the Word and love for the Church until they volunteered to open up Mission Work in India under the General Mission Board of the Church of the Brethren. The Conference at Meyersdale, Pa., in May, 1894, approved of their going and they sailed for Bombay, India, Oct. 16, 1894. By March of the following year, they located in Bulsar. After 12 years at this station, it was decided that they take up the work at Ankleshwar, where for another 12 years they continued in mission work. During this time they have been home on furlough three times, remaining on the field each time seven years except the second term, when to accommodate others, they remained ten years.
The growth of the work so inaugurated by Bishop Stover can be seen by a late report which says there are now ten head mission-stations, 2 hospitals, 45 American Missionaries, over 100 native teachers, 6 native preachers, 33 deacons and over 2,500 Christians, with an outlook for the future so large that everone hesitates to suggest definitely what it might be. The population of their chosen field is about one and a quarter million.
During the scholastic year 1921-22, Mr. Stover, together with his son J. Emmert, spent in the Northwestern University, where on the course of Religious Education he took the Master's degree. He is the author of the following books: "Charley Newcomer," "India, a Problem," "Missions and the Church," "Visiting India," "The Great First-Work of the Church, -- Missions," "The Family Worship."
During the year 1924, Mr. Stover organized a church at Cleveland, Ohio. in 1926.3
