He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Naomi Gray Samples; son, Paul David Samples and wife, Emily of Ball; daughter, Rhonda Cantrell and husband, Paul of Ball; grandchildren, Wyatt Paul, Taylor Leigh, Jacob David and Kelsie Rae Samples, Brittany and Whitley Aswad; two great-granddaughters, Ella and Maya Vidrine of Phoenix, Arizona; brother-in-law, Jack W. Gray of Lufkin, Texas; sister-in-law, Ruby G. Hartman of Ball and very special nephew, Don Monday, his wife Roberta and family of Springfield, Missouri.
Paul served honorably in the United States Air Force and the Missouri Air National Guard with tours of duty in France and Italy and was a life member of the American Legion. His love of flying began when he joined the Civil Air Patrol as a teen. He obtained his private pilot license at a young age and he and his best friend bought a Piper Cub which they flew all over Southern Missouri and Southeastern Kansas. After his service time he worked in the aircraft industry at McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed.
He was a skilled craftsman, builder and electrician. He loved to fish and at one time built his own bass boat. He enjoyed gardening and was always ready for a good game of chess.
Papa was the center of our lives and felt his biggest accomplishment was his family, of whom he was proud of each and every one. His strength and determination in his last years will forever be a source of inspiration.
The family would like to express love and gratitude to the entire staff of the VA Community Living Center 45B and Palliative Care Unit for their tender care and dedication to our Papa.
