Leonard Harlin Savage

Leonard Harlin Savage was born on 30 January 1906 at Pittsburg Co., Indian Territory (now OK). He was the son of Thomas Halsell Savage and Mattie Bland Jones.1 Leonard Harlin Savage married Phoebe King Larimore, daughter of Walter King Larimore and Margery Elizabeth Paxton, on 16 June 1937 at Oklahoma Co., OK. Leonard Harlin Savage was born January 30, 1906 in Blanco, Indian Territory and died December 1, 1992. He was the son of Mattie and Thomas Halsell Savage. His parents and brothers, William R. and M.T. Savage, predeceased him. Leonard attended a two-room school in Blanco through the seventh grade and graduated from McAlester High School in 1924. From 1924 to 1930, he attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, working his way through school by waiting tables, doing stenography work for the University Extension Division and managing his fraternity house. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta, Phi Delta Phi, Phi Beta Kappa, and the Order of the Coif.
After graduation from the College of Law, he became a law clerk for Justice Hefner on the Oklahoma Supreme Court. One year later, he became Assistant State Insurance Commissioner, and held that position with the Oklahoma Insurance Department for four years.
In 1936, Leonard and J.I. Gibson organized a law firm which became Savage, Gibson, Benefield and Shelton, and he was active in the Oklahoma City legal community for many years.
In 1945, Leonard organized Standard Life and Accident Insurance Company, and served as president of Standard Life and its affiliated companies until 1974. He also served as president of TriState Insurance Company of Tulsa in the 1950's and was president of the Oklahoma Association of Fire and Casualty Companies. In 1955, Leonard was appointed to the Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma and served as a regent until 1963. He was a trustee of the Oklahoma University Foundation for several years. In 1971, he received the University's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award.
Leonard was an active member of the Crown Heights Christian Church, serving as chairman of the Building Committee and as a longtime member of the Victory Class. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Phillips University in Enid for more than 20 years and acted as the chairman of the Board of Trustees for more than five years. He was a member of the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, serving as a director and as president of the club for two terms. He was a founder of the Economics Club of Oklahoma City, the Petroleum Club and a member of the Men's Dinner Club. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of The Liberty National Bank and Trust Company.
n 1960, Leonard purchased 640 acres of land north of Tucson, Arizona, which he developed into Skyline Country Club Estates, a community of more than 400 families. In 1962, he organized the Union Bank of Tucson, Arizona, and served as its president for several years. In the 1970's, he developed the Y-Lightning Ranch in Sierra Vista into a residential community.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phoebe; two sons, Philip and Robert of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Elizabeth del Pozo of San Diego, Ca. and Anne Holbrook of Oklahoma City; 14 grandchildren, Ann Harlin, John and Thomas Savage and Stacey Stewart, Laurie Huebner, Phoebe Pluchar, Jeff Huebner, Carlos del Pozo, Michael, Lisa and Sarah Holbrook, Harlin, Mary Anne and Lane Savage; and a great grandson, David Cardenas. He is also survived by his brother, Judge Royce Savage of Tulsa; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Crown Heights Christian Church on Friday, December 4, 1992, at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial in Leonard's name at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.
Leonard was a generous person and a scholar who devoted his life to the education and well-being of his family, friends and those in need. Above all, he was a great husband, father and grandfather.
