Last Rites for Juanita Rhodes

PORT CHICAGO, Nov. 30 - Juanita Ann Rhodes, 49, who died suddenly at her home Thursday night, was given last rites today at Connolly and Taylor Chapel, Martinez.? ? Burial was at the IOOF Cemetery, Pacheco.

Mrs. Rhodes, a Port Chicago resident for more than 40 years, leaves her husband, Charles B., 614 Meridian Ave; her mother, Mrs. Rose Skaggs, Port Chicago; four brothers, Delbert Skaggs, Concord, Charles Skaggs, Martinez; Bruce Skaggs, Port Chicago and Frank Skaggs, Derby, Colo., and two sisters, Colleen Kopitar, and Viola Smith, Port Chicago.

She was buried in 1957 at Pacheco Cemetery and Crematory, Pacheco, Contra Costa Co., CA, Findagrave #21876670.
Note: Observing the date and location of the marriage of Charles Skaggs and Laura Pope, versus the birth dates and locations of their first two children, it appears unlikely that they were both biological parents of their first three children, Delbert, Juanita and Charles, as listed in the 1920 census, notwithstanding that their death records show "Pope" as their mother's maiden name. This was probably a case where Laura was "the mother who raised them", as opposed to their birth mother. It is also possible, although it seems much less likely, that Pope was her name from a prior marriage and that she already had two children in 1912, since she would have been 25 or 26 at the time. The California Birth Index record for Delbert, showing his birth in Solano County and mother's maiden name "Pope", may have been a later record entry rather than an original birth record. DLB 2021.

     Dr. Lewis H. Skaggs was born on 13 October 1835 at Monroe Co., VA (now WV).¹ He was the son of Oliver Skaggs and Mary Ellis.¹ Dr. Lewis H. Skaggs began military service Civil War service, Surgeon, 94th Illinois Infantry, U.S. Army. He married Ella Henton, daughter of Dr. James Henton and Eliza Pope Dawson, in 1866. Dr. Lewis H. Skaggs lived on 15 June 1880 at Padua, McLean Co., IL, Physician.² He died on 9 July 1913 at Ellsworth, McLean Co., IL, at age 77.
