Charlotte Sniffen Bensey
Charlotte Sniffen Bensey, age 82 of Harriman, passed away June 12 at the home of her daughter, Betty, in Pascagoula, MS. As she made her transition, she was surrounded by her daughters, Linda and Betty, her son-in-law, Leslie Jerome, her nurse, Samantha Williams, RN from Hospice of Light and minister, Rev. John Tucker, of Safe Harbor Methodist Church.

Fondly called, "Miss Charlotte", she was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother not only to her biological family, but to an extended family of friends and loved ones. Professionally, she worked for over thirty years with the Tennessee Department of Conservation in the Forestry Division. She was active in the Woods Chapel Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church in Harriman, where she served as a district youth leader. She was a Cub Scout leader, worked within the Juvenile Court System, and was a founding member of the Cornstalk Heights Historic District.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Nelson Bensey, Jr., who died July 4, 2006; parents, Edgar H. Sniffen and Minnie Myers Sniffen; sisters, Dorothy Sniffen, and Catherine Gallaher; brothers, Joe, Mark, and Sam Wheeler.

She is survived by her children: Linda K. Bensey, and Elizabeth A. Bensey and husband, Leslie Jerome, Frank N. "Buddy" Bensey, III and his wife Teresa, Shawn E. Bensey and his wife, Annie, and Michael W. Bensey and his wife, Margery of Knoxville; grandchildren: Kiernan Bensey, son of Michael and Margery Bensey and Ambree Rogers, daughter of Linda Bensey and wife of Chris Rogers; great grandchildren: Landon and Adelyn Rogers, and a host of other family, friends and loved ones.

A private interment was held June 22 in the Roane Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, and in memory of Charlotte's love of children, the family requests you send donations to a children's charity of your choice. Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

She was buried in June 2007 at Roane Memorial Gardens, Harriman, Roane Co., TN.

DOROTHY SNIFFEN
Dorothy Elizabeth Sniffen, 14, former St. Petersburg resident who left here one year ago to make her home in Tennessee died in LaFollette on Jan. 29 of complications following scarlet fever. Word of her death was received this week by friends of the family.

The young girl was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Sniffen who had lived here for a number of years until 1941. She attended local schools and was at the home of an uncle and aunt in LaFollette when she succumbed.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, also include two sisters, Charlotte Ann Sniffen and Mrs. Rhea Gallaher of Wheat, Tenn., and three half brothers, Joe Wheeler, this city, and Mark and Sam Wheeler.

Cause of death: Complications following scarlet fever. She was buried in February 1942 at Woodlawn Cemetery, LaFollette, Campbell Co., TN, Findagrave #10617280.

Edgar Howland Sniffen lived on 19 April 1910 at 1918 North 25th Street, Omaha, Douglas Co., NE, 24, single, salesman, wholesale wallpaper, boarding with the Charlie Smith family.2 He lived in June 1917 at La Crosse, La Crosse Co., WI, WW I draft registration. He gave 1886 as his birth year in lieu of 1884 -- perhaps hoping to be selected for military service. His draft registration information shows he had two dependent children, ages 4 and 5, but also states he was single at the time. He was employed as a brakeman by the C. B. & Q. railroad at Grand Crossing, WI. He married Minnie Augusta Myers, daughter of Millard Henry Myers and Catherine Bowman, circa 1924. Edgar Howland Sniffen lived on 25 April 1930 at St. Petersburg, Pinellas Co., FL, salesman for wallpaper company.3

Electa and William were living in Catherine Blain's household in Varick Twp., along with William F. Blain, age 21, who might have been a twin brother to Electa. Harry was living with the Franklin Wilson family at Covert as a laborer.2
