Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

Former Ventura resident Joseph F. Taylor, 86, of Santa Barbara died Saturday, July 29, 2006, in a Santa Barbara hospital after a brief illness. Dr. Taylor was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Pembroke, Ky., to B. Franklin Taylor and Ruth McGee Taylor. He attended school in Pembroke, grades one through 12, and graduated in 1937. Those were the years of the Great Depression. He went to work that year in a fine department store in Hopkinsville, Ky., as the window and interior display person. Joe began college in 1939 at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky., leaving college in May 1941 to become a naval aviation cadet in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps as an aviator and flew dive-bombers during World War II in the Pacific area. In 1946 Joe returned to college at the University of California in Santa Barbara and then attended Southern California College of Optometry in Los Angeles. He received a Doctor of Optometry degree and began practice in Ventura in 1951. In 1954, Joe met and married Peggy Burnett, a Santa Barbara schoolteacher. Peggy also taught in the Ventura Unified School District until 1981, when they both retired after completing 30 years in their professions. During his career in practice, Joe organized the Ventura County Optometric Society to enhance the intra-professional relations of county optometrists and to improve continued postgraduate education. He maintained the leadership of this organization for 25 years. Joe was elected president of the Tri-Counties Optometric Society in 1963. He was also a member of the California and American Optometric associations. He was an active member of the Ventura Rotary Club for 35 years and was president of that club in 1966-1967. Joe and his wife were members from 1956 until 1995 of First United Methodist Church in Ventura, where he served as head usher for 38 years. They moved to Santa Barbara in 1995 to the Valley Verde Retirement Community and became members of the Santa Barbara First Methodist Church, where they had been married in 1954. Joe is survived by his wife, Peggy Taylor of Santa Barbara, and brother, Ralph W. Taylor of Louisville, Ky. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.

He was buried in August 2006 at Rosedale Cemetery, Pembroke, Christian Co., KY, Findagrave #151528906.
