David Wendel Spence, B.Sc., C.E., a native of Austin, Texas, was born on the 22d day of September 1868. He first attended private schools in Austin and was four years at Prof. Bickler's Texas German and English Academy at that place. In 1889 he graduated from the University of Texas with the degree of B.Sc. In September of 1889, he entered Ann Arbor, where he remained one year at post-graduate work. After a year's practical work at Denver, he obtained the degree of C.E. at Ann Arbor. He was then draughtsman a while at Denver, and in November of 1891 was chief engineer with the South Halsted Street Iron Works. He here designed the girders for the Congress Street Hotel, an addition to the Auditorium Hotel. In August of '02, he accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Drawing at the A. and M. College of Texas.

Harry Y. Spence, lecturer in international health and consultant for international health programs at the University of North Carolina, died early Thursday morning at Duke Medical Center. He was 45.
He is survived by his wife and one daughter, both of Chapel Hill. Dr. Spence, who received his medical degree from the University Medical School in Richmond, Va., was a native of Eugene, Ore.

PEORIA, IL - J. Herschel Spence, 91, of 1201 Northmoor, formerly of East Peoria, died at 4:56 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center.
Born Feb. 3, 1907, in Maquon, he married Marjorie E. Walker on Nov. 11, 1933, in Peoria. She died Feb. 15, 1993, in Peoria.
One sister and one brother also preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, James of Peoria and Allan of Tremont; and three grandchildren.
He was founder of Spence Tool and Rubber.
He was a life member of Masonic Lodge 15, AF&AM, for 50 years; Mohammed Temple, Shrine, AAONMS; and Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Peoria, for more than 50 years.
He attended Glen Oak Christian Church.
Services will be private. Burial will be in Fondulac Cemetery, East Peoria. Arrangements are by Remmert Funeral Home, East Peoria.
