Col. Edmund Alexander Starling1
M, b. 22 November 1826, d. 14 June 1880
Col. Edmund Alexander Starling was born on 22 November 1826. He was the son of William Starling and Mary McDowell. Col. Edmund Alexander Starling married Anna Leslie McCarroll, daughter of Dr. John McCarroll and Elizabeth Kelly, on 4 June 1872.1 Col. Edmund Alexander Starling died on 14 June 1880 at Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY, at age 53 Obituary:
An account of the death of Col. Starling from assassination was published last week. He was descended from families of mark and distinction in Virginia and Kentucky. His relationship extended through many of the large families in both of these States, the McDowells, McClungs, Irvines, Bufords, Marshalls, Prestons, Birneys, McGavichs, Shelbys, Sullivants, etc., all of whom have produced men of character and position. He was no unworthy representative of his family. Born in Kentucky on the 22d day of November, 1826, when a youth he moved to Columbus, Ohio, where in the office of his brother, Col. Lyne Starling, he acquired those exact and comprehensive business habits which characterized him through life. From there he went to New York, where he engaged in mercantile pursuits with eminent success until the defalcation of a partner in the house caused him a loss of the greater part of his acquired capital. He was then appointed Indian agent, and was sent to the tribes on Puget Sound, and the reports of the department of the Government having supervision of such matters show, what the modest reticence of Col. Starling never revealed, that he discharged his duties with scrupulous fidelity and with exceeding ability. After his arduous and responsible services incident to such a position, he removed to Hopkinsville, where he had spent his earliest days and had received the rudiments of his education, and where his mother and many of his immediate family resided. For many years he was the business partner of his brother, William Starling (now deceased), and during the war commanded the Thirty-fifth Regiment of Kentucky Mounted Infantry Volunteers in the Federal service.
Since the war he married Miss Annie L., youngest daughter of the late Dr. John McCarroll, of Hopkinsville, and led, with his devoted wife and in the bosom of his family, that quiet and retired life which his temperament best fitted him to enjoy.
Col. Starling was an undemonstrative man, though strong and faithful in his friendships. He was pre-eminently kind-hearted and charitable, and no worthy, distressed person ever left him empty-handed. There are many in this community among the lowly who rise up and call him blessed, and many others still who will miss his kind and cheering words of advice and sympathy. He was a man of the most refined tastes, and exhibited the greatest fondness for books, music, paintings and flowers. And no one who ever met him in social life, or sat with him at his hospitable board, could fail to be impressed with the ease and dignity of his manners, and with the generosity and kindness of his nature.
But, best of all, Col. Starling was a Christian in the true sense of the word. He was the son of Christian parents who, faithful to their trust, instructed him early in life in Bible truth, as formulated in the doctrines and standards of the Presbyterian Church, of which they were members. While quite young his father died, and he was left with his widowed mother, to whom he was devotedly attached. It was not until after her death, which occurred in the year 1869, that he united with the First Presbyterian Church of this city. Several years after uniting with the church he was elected and installed a Ruling Elder. He filled up the measure of his days with active Christian work, and made the Christian life his chief concern. It seemed to be his great effort to make up in the activity of his last years for the long years of his earlier life which he had failed to devote to the service of the Master. He said to the writer of this sketch, in speaking of this, that he had never, in all his wanderings, been able to shake off the impressions of the Christian instruction given him by his mother in the days of his youth. The regular services of the church, the prayer meeting, the Sunday-school, and all church work commanded his most earnest interest and loving service. From the beginning of his Christian life, he resolutely laid aside all animosities, and the question, What is my duty? had its answer in its fulfillment.
Cause of death: Was assassinated while running for office of county sheriff. He was buried in June 1880 at Riverside Cemetery, Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KY, Find A Grave Memorial# 89740062.

Henry Lyne Starling was born on 23 August 1848 at Kentucky.2 He was the son of Col. Lyne Starling and Marie Antoinette Hensley.
Note: In 1868, the William Starling Land Company, run by Lyne Starling (b. 1806) purchased Sunnyside Plantation in Chicot County, Arkansas from the estate of Robert P. Pepper (Lyne's son in-law) of Kentucky whose family was related by marriage to the Starlings. Lyne Starling sent his sons Lyne and Charles to run it when they graduated from Yale in 1871. His son William also ended up there.....not sure when he came but before Sunnyside was sold. In 1881, it was sold to John C. Calhoun, the grandson and namesake of the famous John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. The Starling sons then moved to Greenville. A handwritten account of the family was written by Maria Hensley Starling -- shown below. The Levee Board mentioned in her accounts is the levee for the Mississippi River.
Lake Village, Chicot County, Arkansas, is just across the Mississippi River from Greenville. The oxbow lake, Lake Chicot, has become a popular recreation lake. The Sunnyside name is still used today (2000).
Also......the Charles mentioned above ended up moving from Greenville to Canada. He had a son, William, who was accused of embezzling from a bank. William was married but had no children. He committed suicide -- apparently because of the accusation. He is buried in Greenville. His father, Charles, paid the bank the missing amount and subsequently moved his family to Canada. That's how a branch of the Starlings got to Canada.

(daughter of Lyne Starling & Kate Crittenden Watson)
Maria Antoinette Hensley married Lyne Starling in Frankfort, Kentucky in 1834 and went to live in Columbus, Ohio, a kind of colony of his relatives. Their first six children were born there. They then moved to New York much against the wishes of Lyne's uncle, Lyne, one of the founders of Columbus, who had promised to make Lyne his heir if he would stay in Columbus. The seventh child, Lyne, was born in Kentucky on one of his mother's visits to her relatives in Frankfort. Charles and Laura were born in New York. A business crash in New York about 1858 caused them to move to the prairie in Illinois, near Kankakee and build a home on land owned by relatives until plans could be made for the future.
When the Civil War broke out in 1861 the family moved back to Kentucky and Lyne (the father) and his oldest son William joined the Federal Army. After the war was over he was interested in some pioneer work in West Virginia. Elizabeth, the oldest daughter, was married in 1865 to Robert Perry Pepper and moved to a beautiful home where all of her children were born, which is still occupied by some of her descendants. William went into business in New York, Charles and Lyne went to Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. Mrs. Starling and Laura being the only ones left at home, she sold the big house on Main Street and bought a smaller one near the home of her daughter, Elizabeth that had more ground for gardening, etc.
In 1871 a bank in Frankfort having come into possession of a plantation, Sunnyside, Arkansas about ten miles south of Greenville, Mississippi of which they wished to dispose and Mr. Starling having had some experience in planting cotton, they offered it to him on what he thought were very favorable (liberal) terms. The family now divided its time between Sunnyside, Arkansas and Frankfort, Kentucky. In June, 1871 Lyne and Charles were graduated from Yale. Lyne was married on October 1st to Kate Crittenden Watson of Frankfort and took his bride to Sunnyside. In 1876, Mr. Starling died very suddenly, in New Orleans, where William had taken him to see the celebrated Dr. Chopin. He was buried in New Orleans, but in 1896 when his wife died in Greenville and her body was taken to Frankfort for burial, his body was moved to Frankfort and placed beside hers in Frankfort's beautiful cemetery.
In 1878 Charles was married to Annie Taylor Johnson who lived about four miles from Sunnyside at Lakeport. They were married rather hurriedly as Mrs. Johnson had to go to St. Louis to buy supplies for the plantation. There are many funny stories about Charles' trousseau. It was just at the end of the terrible yellow fever epidemic, Greenville was still in quarantine and of course no shopping could be done. He had the pick of the wardrobes of the family.
In 1882 a large land company in the East bought Sunnyside and several adjoining plantations and thus ended their plantation life. The family moved over to Greenville. William though having studied engineering at New York University had not had an opportunity to utilize his knowledge and feeling rather incapable applied for the job of rodman with the Levee Board. Soon after when his ability was realized he was made chief engineer for the Levee District. Lyne went into the mercantile business, the firm of Starling and Smith. Charles, already a young lawyer, went into the law office of Shields and Campbell. Later upon the death of Mr. Shields the firm became Campbell and Starling.
More can be found on the Starling side in the "Starling Genealogy and Family Memorial."
Henry Lyne Starling married Katherine Crittenden Watson, daughter of Henry Watson and Elizabeth Anne Todd, in 1872 at Frankfort, Franklin Co., KY.3 Henry Lyne Starling died on 4 October 1916 at age 68.
