An attorney and court clerk, Lyne Starling was the son of early Frankfort businessman William Starling. During the Civil War he attained the rank of Colonel, and he was on the staff of Union Army General Thomas Leonidas Crittenden.

His son, William, also served in the Union Army, and his daughter Lizzie, was the wife of distiller-horseman Robert P Pepper. Starling lived at 304 Wilkinson Street.
