Will of Moses John Starr:

In the name of the Benevolent Father of all, I Moses Starr of Falls Township, Hocking County in the state of Ohio knowing the uncertainty of death and being of sound mind and memory, and being desirous of disposing of the property with which I have been blessed by the giver of all good and directing the manner of its distribution, among my family and children after my decease: do hereby make and publish this my last Will and Testament and hereby revoke all others.

Item 1st. I give and devise to my beloved wife Sarah in lieu of her dower and distributive share of my estate one equal and undivided half of all my real estate consisting of about 200 acres, being the farm on which I now live, to have and to hold and use and occupy during her natural life time and no longer, and also one third of all my personal property of which I may be owner at the time of my death during her natural life and no longer and at the death of my said wife the said real estate so given in lieu of her dower and such part of the personal property so given as aforesaid to my said wife in lieu of her distributive share of my estate as then may remain unconsumed and unexpended or the proceeds thereof shall go to and belong to my son Noah W. Starr in addition to the provision here in after made to him.

Item 2. As to my son, Benjamin Starr, I have advanced to him all that I desire him to have.

Item 3. I give and devise to my daugher Elizabeth W. wife of Pennock two hundred dollars, to be paid after the death of my said wife to the said Elizabeth or her heirs in addition to what she has heretofore received from me.

Item 4. As to my step son John T. Clowe I have settled with him and have paid him off, and I do not desire him to have anything further out of my estate.

Item 5. As to my step son Charles W. Clowe, I have given him all I desire him to have, but I desire that his son James Ellis Clowe, shall have fifty dollars out of my estate, to be paid to him when he arrives at the age of twenty-one years.

Item 6. As to my step son Craven W. Clowe, I have settled with him and paid him off, and do not desire him to have anyting further out of my estate.

Item 7. As to my step son Elijah B. Clowe, I have settled with him and paid him off and do not desire that he should have anything further out of my estate.

Item 8. As to my daugher Hariett G. wife of William Stewart , I have recently deeded to her forty acres of land in addition to what she had heretofore received from me, is all that I desire she should have out of my estate.

Item 9. As to my step daughter Mary Ann, wife of John Williams, I desire that she should have the sum of one hundred dollars in addition to what she has already received, to be paid at the time of my decease, and no more.

Item 10. As to my daughter Martha J. wife of George Hite, I have lately deeded to her forty acres of land which in addition to what she has already received, is all that I desire she should have of my estate.

Item 11. As to my son Thomas Starr, I have lately deeded to him 80 acres of land and desire that he should have a lot of land off of home place on which I now live, adjoining his land on which he now lives on the east of about 15 or 20 acres, commencing at the southwest of a forty acre lot, then to run east over to the hollow, near a beech tree, then north across the forty acre lot to a beech and white oak, marked "H 3t.", about 2 rods from the north line of which he shall have possession after my decease which in addition to what he had heretofore received is all that I desire he shall have of my estate.

Item 12. As to my son Moses Starr, I have lately deeded him 160 acres of land which in addition to what he has heretofore received, is all that I desire he shall have of my estate.

Item 13. As to my son Noah W. Starr, I hereby give; and bequeath to him the home farm on which I now live containing about 200 acres, less the lot above devised to my son Thomas Starr, and subject to the right of my wife in the manner and form above described in this will, which shall be considered to include the dwelling house, water, garden, orchard, etc. to my said wife her life time and no longer as aforesaid and after the death of myself and my said wife said son Noah W. Starr and also it is my desire that all the personal property, money and effects that may in any way or manner belong to me at the time of my decease, and after the decease of my said wife, shall belong to and is hereby bequeathed to my said son, Noah W. Starr, provided, however that my said son, Noah W. Starr, shall pay first out of my effects all the legacies provided for in this will, to the person entitled to the same, and at the times mentioned in the will. Also that he shall pay all just claims that may exist against me at the time of my decease, which shall include all funeral expense of myself and wife, and further that he shall take care of me; and my wife so long as either of us may live. But the last clause as to taking care of me and my wife, we will see to it ourselves, and after our death there is no claim to exist against my said Noah W. Starr on that account.

Item 14. I hereby appoint John Williams and my said son Noah W. Starr, my Executors with full power and authority to carry this Will into effect according to the true intent and meaning thereof. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 8th day of November 1865.

CODICIL

Whereas I, Moses Starr, on the 8th day of November, 1865, made the above as my last will and testament of that day, I do hereby declare the following to be Codicil to the same.

I do hereby revoke so much of the above will as conveyed forty acres of land to my daughter Harriet Stewart, and having this day paid to her one hundred dollars in cash, it is my desire that she have no more out of my estate, I also revoke so much of the above will as conveyed 4 acres of land to my daughter Martha Hite, and I direct that after my death, that said Martha have twenty dollars out of my estate, and no more.

1820 Ohio census places Moses Starr in Hocking Co. OH. Perhaps he came to OH without his family until it was more civilized.

26 Feb 1849 Deed Book 35-467 William Triplett sells 245 acres to James C. Teter for $1484. Part of this land Triplett had purchased from someone else and also he had sold 60 acres to a G. Kaser. The balance was 185 acres. Details the same, Beards Run, etc.


4 Nov1852 Deed Book 38-157 George W. Teter takes ownership of the 245 acres minus acreage owned by Kaser, per a court case. George was the son of deceased James C. Teter.

29 Oct 1910 Deed Book 190-293 Jester G. Teter sells 116 acres to Martha "Mattie" Shields for $721. The sale mentions the 125 acres but 116 is what he has to sell.


20 Jun 1930 Date of will of Martha Shields, leaving 125 acres to son Dayton G. Shields. Martha states that the wife of Dayton is to never get ownership of the land. At the time of her death she didn't really still own all 125 acres.


1 Jun 1954 Dayton G. Shields sells 116.64 acres to Gobel Osborn. Don't have the price.


My 1910 Gas Co maps show where Martha Shields and J. G. Teter lived which corresponds where Jabez Lang and G. W. Teter lived on the 1886 map.

Moses John Starr was born on 3 June 1791 at Harrison Co., VA (now WV). He was the son of Rev. Moses Starr and Elizabeth Woodward. Moses John Starr married Elizabeth Webb, daughter of Rev. Benjamin Webb and Elizabeth Nixon, on 24 December 1811 at Beard's Run, Simpson Creek, Harrison Co., VA (now WV), Ceremony by her father, Rev. Benjamin Webb. Moses John Starr married Sarah Noble Beveridge. Moses John Starr lived in August 1850 at Falls Twp., Hocking Co., OH, Census p.47A. He lived in June 1860 at Falls Twp., Hocking Co., OH.¹ He died on 7 October 1870 at Green Twp., Hocking Co., OH, at age 79. He was buried in October 1870 at Otterbein Chapel Cemetery, Gore, Hocking Co., OH, Findagrave #27455123.

     Moses L. Starr was born on 30 October 1827 at Jefferson Co., OH.^1,2 He was the son of Merrick Starr and Ann Updegraff.³ Moses L. Starr married Emily E. Eastman, daughter of Loren Eastman and Henrietta Farrar, on 3 November 1853 at Delaware Co., OH. Moses L. Starr lived on 10 June 1870 at Delaware, Delaware Co., OH, retired hardware merchant.¹ He lived on 17 June 1880 at Delaware, Delaware Co., OH, hardware merchant.⁴ He died in 1904. He was buried in 1904 at Oak Grove Cemetery, Delaware, Delaware Co., OH, Findagrave #18140920.

     Moses Wesley Starr was born on 7 December 1847 at Monroe Co., OR. He was the son of Samuel Fletcher Starr and Talitha Cumi Belknap. Moses Wesley Starr married Emma Alice Wellsher, daughter of Jacob Wellsher and Christine (?), on 2 June 1872 at Benton Co., OR. Moses Wesley Starr was buried in February 1912 at Greenwood Memorial Park, Spokane, Spokane Co., WA. He died on 11 February 1912 at Spokane, Spokane Co., WA, at age 64.

     Mulford Starr was born in 1843. He was the son of Henry Starr and Ann W. Bersford.

     Myra Eva Starr was born on 8 February 1878 at Benton Co., OR. She was the daughter of Miles Turner Starr and Martha Hawley.

     Myrtle Starr married Tennyson Adkins. Myrtle Starr was born on 22 December 1909. She was the daughter of Jasper Cleveland Starr and Anna Odella Boniphant. Myrtle Starr died on 8 August 1985 at age 75.

     Myrtle Starr was the daughter of Ransom Fletcher Starr and Jessie Driver.

     Nancy Starr was born circa 1778. She was the daughter of Moses Starr and Anna Margarethe Quattelbaum.

     Nancy Starr was born at Ohio. She was the daughter of Samuel Starr and Elizabeth Stump. Nancy Starr married John Johnson on 5 September 1841.

     Nancy Starr was born on 11 August 1816 at Belmont Co., OH. She was the daughter of John Wesley Starr and Hannah McWilliams. Nancy Starr died on 18 April 1907 at Redding, Shasta Co., CA, at age 90.

     Nancy Starr was born on 25 March 1811 at McMinn Co., TN. She was the daughter of Caleb Starr and Nancy Harlan. Nancy Starr married Samuel Lattimore on 29 December 1829 at McMinn Co., TN. Nancy Starr died on 8 July 1834 at age 23.

     Nancy Starr was born on 24 August 1828 at Belmont Co., OH. She was the daughter of Jabez Starr and Jane Gregory. Nancy Starr married Milton Beck on 3 March 1849 at Van Buren Co., IA. Nancy Starr died on 23 September 1903 at McCune, Crawford Co., KS, at age 75.

     Nancy Starr was born on 20 September 1843 at Camp Creek Twp., Pike Co., OH. She was the daughter of James Starr and Elizabeth Lee. Nancy Starr died on 24 February 1854 at Camp Creek Twp., Pike Co., OH, at age 10.

     Nancy Starr was born on 30 December 1822 at Camp Creek Twp., Pike Co., OH. She was the daughter of Henry C. Starr and Sarah Ann Lewis. Nancy Starr married John Johnson on 5 September 1841 at Waverly, Pike Co., OH.

     Nancy Ann Starr was born on 27 September 1836 at Cherokee Nation West (now AR). She was the daughter of Joseph McMinn Starr and Delilah Adair. Nancy Ann Starr married William Wirt Duncan, son of John Duncan and Elizabeth Abercrombie, circa 1852. Nancy Ann Starr married Charles Gordon Duncan, son of John Duncan and Elizabeth Abercrombie. Nancy Ann Starr died on 9 September 1894 at age 57.

     Nancy Emily Starr was born on 15 March 1852. She was the daughter of Thomas S. Starr and Mary E. Grove. Nancy Emily Starr died on 3 June 1930 at age 78.

     Nancy Esther Starr was born on 15 May 1885. She was the daughter of Joseph McMinn Starr and Susan Shell. Nancy Esther Starr died on 28 September 1929 at age 44.

     Nancy Graham Starr died at Bellefontaine, Logan Co., OH. She was born on 11 March 1818 at Ohio. She was the daughter of James Starr and Margaret McWilliams. Nancy Graham Starr married John Nevin in 1837.

     Nancy Jane Starr was born on 1 September 1864 at Texas. She was the daughter of Orville R. Starr and Susan Pearce. Nancy Jane Starr married Robert Baxter Pruett. Nancy Jane Starr died on 7 January 1944 at California at age 79.

     Nancy Jane Starr was born circa 1852 at Beaver Twp., Guernsey (now Noble) Co., OH.¹ She was the daughter of John Wesley Starr and Christina Bowersock.¹

     Nancy Jane Christie Starr was also known as "Jennie". She married Amos Lee Allison. Nancy Jane Christie Starr was born on 26 June 1895. She was the daughter of Walter Adair Starr and Ella Elizabeth Christie.

     Nancy Rice Starr was born circa 1812. She was the daughter of Moses John Starr and Elizabeth Webb. Nancy Rice Starr died in 1907 at Healdsburg, Sonoma Co., CA.

     Nancy Watts Starr was born on 15 April 1808 at Belmont Co., OH. She was the daughter of James Starr and Nancy Reddick. Nancy Watts Starr married Jacob Price on 16 February 1830 at Belmont Co., OH. Nancy Watts Starr married Elias McFarling on 13 June 1847. Nancy Watts Starr died in 1878.

     Nathan Starr was born on 15 July 1869. He was the son of Thomas S. Starr and Mary E. Grove. Nathan Starr married Ella Clarke circa 1893. Nathan Starr married Rosa Myrtle Wolf, daughter of Noah Wolf, on 7 September 1907. Nathan Starr died on 5 November 1953 at Logan Co., OH, at age 84. He was buried in November 1953 at Smith Chapel Cemetery, Logan Co., OH.

     Nathan Starr was born in 1823. He was the son of John Starr and Elizabeth Kennedy.

     Nathan Starr was born on 30 January 1825 at Jefferson Co., OH. He was the son of Merrick Starr and Ann Updegraff.

     Nathan Elza Starr was also known as "Elzie". He was born on 13 October 1872 at Wells Co., IN, or 1871 per online genealogies.¹ He was the son of Christopher Columbus Starr and Cenith E. West. Nathan Elza Starr married Mary Jane Pace, daughter of Joseph Linaberry Pace and Rachel Antes Merritt, on 14 January 1901 at Wells Co., IN. Nathan Elza Starr married Bertha Moser, daughter of Benedict Moser and Elizabeth Gerwig, on 22 April 1905 at Wells Co., IN, This marriage broke up before 1918 when Bertha was remarried to Herman Fredrick Lang of Wood County, Ohio.² Nathan Elza Starr lived on 26 April 1910 at Bluffton, Wells Co., IN, Teamster, with his own team.² He lived on 14 April 1930 at 219 North Jefferson Street, Montpelier, Blackford Co., IN, Occupation: Teamster, marital status "S."³ He was buried on 26 December 1938 at Friends Cemetery aka Keystone Cemetery, Keystone, Wells Co., IN, per obituary. He died on 27 December 1938 at Montpelier, Blackford Co., IN, at age 66

Montpelier, Ind., Dec. 24 -- Elzie Starr, former Montpelier man, died yesterday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Sargent of Perrysville, O., relatives here were notified. The body will be returned to Keystone for funeral services at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, with burial in the Keystone Cemetery. Besides the daughter, a sister, Mrs. Frank McCall, and a brother, Richard Starr, both of Montpelier, survive. The decedent was a native of Wells County and spent practically his entire lifetime in this community.

     Nathan Hollingsworth Starr was born on 29 December 1835 at Richmond, Wayne Co., IN. He was the son of Charles West Starr and Elizabeth Wilson. Nathan Hollingsworth Starr married Clarissa Gustin, daughter of Amos H. Gustin and Margaret Eyer, on 1 September 1868. Nathan Hollingsworth Starr lived in 1880 at Fall Creek, Henry Co., IN, Census p.65C. He died on 21 July 1896 at age 60.

     Nehemiah Starr was born in 1793 at Maiden Creek, Berks Co., PA. He was the son of James Starr and Eleanor Davis. Nehemiah Starr married Esther Willits. Nehemiah Starr died in 1829.

     Nehemiah Davis Starr was born on 13 January 1838 at Maidencreek Twp., Berks Co., PA.¹ He was the son of James Starr and Phoebe Hilles. Nehemiah Davis Starr began military service Civil War service, U.S. Army, Co. E, 21st Missouri Volunteer Infantry, 1 Lt; Henrietta was approved for a widow's pension in 1913. He married Henrietta Hadley in 1865 at Missouri. Nehemiah Davis Starr lived on 1 June 1870 at Monticello, Lewis Co., MO, County clerk.² He died on 22 December 1912 at Canton, Lewis Co., MO, at age 74

FROM THE CANTON PRESS DATED: DECEMBER 27, 1912:

Death claimed another well-known and highly esteemed citizen, Capt. N.D. Starr at midnight Dec. 22nd while he had been in declining health for several months, yet his departure was unexpected by his friends.

Deceased was raised a Quaker and adhered to that belief during life. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for a number of years, an active Odd Fellow and useful man.

His funeral was conducted at his late residence on North Seventh street, Tuesday afternoon by Elder Byron Ingold assisted by Elder Roy Youtz, after which the remains were laid to rest in Forest Grove Cemetery by the members of Canton lodge No. 44 I.O.O.F.

Nehemiah David Starr was born in Berks County, Penn. In early life he moved with his father's family to Alliance, Ohio where he received his education at Alliance High school and Mt. Union College. The family moved to Lewis County in 1859 where he taught school, until in response to his country's call in 1861 he enlisted in the 31st MO. Volunteers and was afterward made 1st. Lieutenant of his regiment. He continued in the service until sometime in 1865 when he came home to fill the office of County Clerk of Lewis county. In 1870 he moved to Canton and engaged in Business and has remained ever since in Canton and vicinity except for about a year during which he was engaged in the lumber business in Kansas.

In 1865 he was married to Miss Henrietta Headly. To this union were born five children, two sons and three daughters, who with seven grandchildren survive him.

Had he lived until January 13 he would have been 75 years old. The following relatives from a distance attended the funeral: P.J. Starr, a brother, and wife, of Kahoka; James P. Starr of Fairfield, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Tweedy of Keokuk; Mrs. Frank Meyers of Memphis, MO; Henry Nichols and family of Williamstown.

He was buried in December 1912 at Forest Grove Cemetery, Canton, Lewis Co., MO, Findagrave #7969261.
