88, of Montpelier died Tuesday. The Wells County native was a farmer and retiree of Indiana Box Corp. Surviving are a daughter, a son, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services were 11 a.m. today in Walker & Glancy Funeral Home, Montpelier.

Note: Frank was a deaf mute. When he was about five years old, he and his cousin Garth Swigert were playing on a stock watering tank as a thunderstorm approached. Blanche Swigert, Garth's mother, went outside to call the boys indoors just as lightning struck the water tank. Both boys were thrown clear of the tank, leaving Frank with injuries that left him a deaf mute. Story told to Richard K. Swigert by Garth Swigert in 1985.

     Kenneth Wayne Swigert was born on 5 April 1911 at Fiat, Jay Co., IN.¹ He was the son of Peter Martin Swigert and Blanche Bears.¹ Kenneth Wayne Swigert married Arlene Marie Becker, daughter of Frederick Carl Becker and Lillian Elizabeth Collard, on 27 November 1937 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bluffton, Wells Co., IN. Kenneth Wayne Swigert died on 7 January 1993 at Green Bay, Brown Co., WI, at age 81.

Kenneth Wayne Swigert attended his first year of college at Ball State Teachers College in Muncie, IN. His second year he attended Purdue University at Lafayette, IN. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. After that year and during the Great Depression he dropped out of college due to lack of money. His old basketball coach, Louie Means, who he stayed in contact with, was coaching at East High School in Green Bay, WI, and told him that if he moved to Green Bay he could find work and also play basketball in a city industrial league. In 1932 Kenneth moved from Indiana to Green Bay, WI, living with Clarence and Emily Gille at 1408 Elm Street. He started working for the Shefford Cheese Company as a laborer dumping cream. He worked his way up to the position of personnel manager and stayed with them until they were bought by Standard Brands Company and the company was moved to Chicago about 1945. He was offered employment with them if he moved to Chicago but declined the offer and stayed in Green Bay. Sometime later he went to work for the Northern Paper Mill in Green Bay as a mill laborer and worked his way up to a production supervisor in the converting department. He stayed there until his retirement in 1972. The Northern Paper Mill Company changed its name to American Can Company and then to the James River Corporation as it was purchased and merged with the larger companies.

     Lela May Swigert was born on 30 July 1894 at Wells Co., IN, 1900 census shows 1895, however all other sources show 1894.¹ She was the daughter of Lindley Allen Swigert and Minnie Olive Dawley.¹ Lela May Swigert married Louis D. Taylor, son of Alonzo Martin Taylor and Emma Elnora Platt, on 27 November 1917 at Wells Co., IN. Lela May Swigert died on 8 May 1980 at Montpelier, Blackford Co., IN, at age 85. She was buried in May 1980 at Fairview Cemetery, Bluffton, Wells Co., IN, Findagrave #73250553.

     Lindley Allen Swigert was born on 27 March 1872 at Wells Co., IN.¹ He was the son of Adam Swigert and Eliza Ellen Kelley.¹ Lindley Allen Swigert married Minnie Olive Dawley, daughter of Horace Dawley and Martha Emmons, on 2 January 1892 at Fiat, Jay Co., IN. Lindley Allen Swigert died on 18 January 1960 at Nottingham Twp., Wells Co., IN, at age 87. He was buried in 1960 at Twin Hill Cemetery, Pennville, Jay Co., IN, Findagrave #104968336.

     Lydia Ann Swigert was born on 14 September 1830 at Greene Co., OH.¹ She was the daughter of Peter Swigert and Rebecca Tobias.¹ Lydia Ann Swigert married James Green Berry Jr., son of James Green Berry and Permelia Green, on 15 October 1850 at Wells Co., IN. Lydia Ann Swigert lived on 21 August 1860 at P.O. Dawson, Sangamon Co., IL.² She lived on 30 June 1870 at Elkhart, Logan Co., IL.³ She lived on 11 June 1880 at Towanda Twp., McLean Co., IL, Farming.⁴ She died on 1 August 1894 at age 63 dates per headstone.      Mary Ann Swigert was born in February 1840 at Greene Co., OH.¹ She was the daughter of Peter Swigert and Rebecca Tobias.¹ Mary Ann Swigert married Oliver Irey, son of Mahlon Irey and Rachel Margaret McBride, on 3 February 1859 at Wells Co., IN.      Mary Hendrick Swigert was born on 24 August 1880 at Woodford Co. (probably), KY.¹ She was the daughter of Jacob Swigert and Susanna Starling Lyne.¹ Mary Hendrick Swigert married Col. Jarius Alphaeus Moore, son of Andrew J. Moore and Mary Louise Burnham, on 1 January 1907 at North Carolina. Mary Hendrick Swigert lived in April 1910 at Jamestown, Newport Co., RI. She died on 6 March 1948 at age 67.

"The constitution of the Mt. Zion Reformed Church was effected August 28, 1845, the Rev. H. Willard, pastor of the Xenia charge, officiating; Jacob Coy and Jacob Rike being installed as elders and Solomon Glotfelter and Rignell B. Marley, deacons. Sometime prior to this date Michael Swigart, Henry Coy, and Jacob Rike had been appointed trustees to superintend the erection of a house of worship in the northwest quarter of section 35, Beavercreek township, and on October 5 of that same year that house was completed and dedicated, articles of agreement being entered into at the same time whereby the house should be held and used as the joint property of the Evangelical Lutherans and Reformed congregations."

p.821 Samuel and Elizabeth (Hanney) Tobias, from Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania to Zimmerman (corner of N. Fairfield and Dayton-Xenia Roads). Sam died 1829, leaving Elizabeth with 3 sons and 3 daughters. "The widow Tobias married Michael Swigart and lived to be seventy-six years of age, her death occurring in 1871"

"Following the death of his father, William Tobias was taken into the home of Peter Swigart, a brother of his stepfather and there he remained until he was 21 years of age. ... William Tobias was twice married. On December 24, 1846 he was united in marriage to Sarah Swigart, who died in 1851 at the age of 24 years, leaving two sons, Martin Luther and Samuel, both of whom are now deceased, the former of whom became a farmer in Beavercreek township and the latter of whom made his home in Dayton. Martin Tobias was twice married. By his first wife Christine Peeples he had two children, Edgar and Clara, and by his second wife Mary Barnhart he had three children, Homer, Harold, and Howard. On June 19, 1852 William Tobias married secondly Jane Miller who was born in Bath townshiop November 25, 1824, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Wheeler) Miller."

He was born on 15 March 1879 at Penn Twp., Jay Co., IN.^1,2 He was the son of Adam Swigert and Eliza Ellen Kelley.¹ Peter Martin Swigert married Blanche Bears, daughter of John Wesley Bears and Rosa Alice Herrmann, on 27 March 1901, license dated 25 MAR 1901. Peter Martin Swigert died on 20 January 1960 at Bluffton, Wells Co., IN, at age 80.

"Morton and Blanche ran a geneal store in Fiat, Indiana. He is listed on his son Garth's birth certificate and in the 1910 and 1920 censuses as a merchant. Morton later went back to barbering and had his barber shop located in downtown Bluffton. He barbered up until the day he died in 1960.

Grandchildren's memories: The following episode seemed to take place every time we visited our grandparents in Bluffton, Indiana. Grandpa Swigert wore a hearing aid due to his partial deafness, and did not hear well even when it seemed to be working properly, or maybe he was just entertaining the dinner guests. At the conclusion of dinner, Grandma Swigert would push back her chair and say "I've had sufficient" and Grandpa would answer "Been a fishin?". "No", Grandma would say, "I've had plenty". Grandpa would then reply "You caught twenty?". Grandma would then look at Grandpa and say "You old fool!" and he would answer back "And broke your pole?". This was usually followed by a lot of laughter from everyone in attendance. Then the men retired to the living room and the ladies would clear the table and do the dishes."

     Robert Garth Swigert was born on 17 April 1938 at Bloomington, Monroe Co., IN. He was the son of Garth Leon Swigert and Julia Ione Mikesell. Robert Garth Swigert died on 5 January 2007 at Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN, at age 68.

     Sharon Ann Swigert was born on 14 August 1942 at Green Bay, Brown Co., WI. She was the daughter of Kenneth Wayne Swigert and Arlene Marie Becker. Sharon Ann Swigert died on 12 May 2017 at Green Bay, Brown Co., WI, at age 74.
