Horace Martin Tallman

M, b. 19 December 1863, d. 7 April 1929
Note: Horace M. Tallman earned a well-deserved place in the annals of American agriculture as the inventor of the first successful pick-up hay baler. The first pick-up hay baler was sold in July, 1930. Until then, hay baling was a back-breaking manual task accomplished with pitchforks and sweat. Born December 19, 1863 on a farm near Cowden, 14 miles southwest of Shelbyville, his spent his early years farming. He married Emma S. Foor in 1886. At the age of 25 he began buying and selling hay, and he sold farm implements and insurance in his hay business in Herrick, Illinois where he lived until 1899, and raised a family of 3 sons and 3 daughters. In 1899 he moved to Shelbyville where he managed at 160-acre farm and entered the insurance and real estate business with his brother. in 1902 he opened a farm implement store specializing in sales of hay presses. In 1905 he built a new home. During this time he spent long hours building small models of mechanized hay balers, with the goal of replacing the horse power with a gasoline engine. In 1915 he sold his first invention to the Ann Arbor Machine Co. for $5,000 plus royalties for 7 years. When the Ann Arbor Machine Co. went bankrupt around 1919, Horace Tallman and his sons bought the business and moved to Ann Arbor to operate the factory. In October, 1922, they decided to move the entire business to Shelbyville and operate it in the Smith along with the railroad and mining business. It required 26 rail cars to ove the equipment to Shelbyville, at a cost of $200 per car. Horace Tallman first conceived of the idea of mounting a windrow pick-up attachment to a stationary hay baler that the Ann Arbor Machine Co. had been building since 1882. Farmers were interested in a baler that would lessen the labor expense in taking in crops of hay and alfalfa. many years of testing and experimenting with the pickup baler followed, and only after Horace had passed away did his son sell the first working hay baler to a farmer. The product became very popular and by 1935 they were operating in 19 countries.

Horace Martin Tallman was born on 19 December 1863 at Cowden, Shelby Co., IL. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Tallman and Nancy Craig Tallman. Horace Martin Tallman married Emma S. Foor in 1886. Horace Martin Tallman died on 7 April 1929 at Shelbyville, Shelby Co., IL, at age 65.
