Anna Tallman

F, b. 15 December 1778, d. 7 October 1866
Anna Tallman was born on 15 December 1778 at Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA.1 She was the daughter of Benjamin Tallman and Dinah Boone. Anna Tallman married (?) Percy in 1795. Anna Tallman married Lewis Scothorn on 4 November 1800 at Rockingham Co., VA. Anna Tallman married William Turner after December 1815. Anna Tallman lived on 19 August 1850 at Walnut Twp., Pickaway Co., OH, Living with granddaughter Catherine (Trone) Long's family. She is also listed in her son Lewis Jr.'s household.1 She died on 7 October 1866 at Pickaway Co., OH, at age 87.
Note: per Herbert C. Probst 13173 County Road 215, Findley, Ohio 45840:

"In 1805 Lewis Scothorn left Virginia and crossed to Ohio. He took up a goodly piece of land in Walnut Twp., in Pickaway Co., Ohio, which although then was of a wild and unsettled section, was favourably located as to water, the first consideration among our pioneer fathers. He had married Anna Tallman (2nd) and six sons and two daughters were born to them bearing the names of Lewis, John, William, George, Charles, Samuel, Eliza and Sarah. Lewis Scothorn died in 1816, having lived in Walnut Twp. during the whole of his life in Ohio. He was a typical pioneer and gained a great local reputation as a woodsman, a great hunter and maker of moccasins. He was a man of great industry and began the clearing of the pioneer farm which he did not live to complete."

Anna Tallman had married first in Rockingham Co., a Mr. (James?) Piercy and they had two children: James Piercy who married (1) Nellie Peters; (2nd) Sally Noble and had 8 children - he died at Canal Winchester, Ohio; and Delilah Piercy who married Thomas Anderson and had 6 children - she died in Pickaway Co., Ohio.

"The widow of Lewis Scothorn subsequently married (third) a Mr. Turner and was generally known in her age as Grandmother Turner in her neighborhood, where she lived to advanced years.." (Mr. Turner died not long after this marriage).

Annah (Tallman) Piercy, Scothorn, Turner resided at the home of her son, Lewis S. Scothorn and his wife, Susannah Westenhaver and their six children. (1850 Census as quoted in "The Scothorn Family", by Ralph H. Lane 1955, page 55).

Note also that some descendants insist on the name as being "Annah", although she signed "Anna".

"Lewis Scothorn, the founder of the family in Ohio, lies in an old burying ground north of East Ringgold in a spot not far from the place where he first located when he came to Ohio. Where, in his day, waved the tall grass that concealed the richness of fertile land beneath, or grew the dense forest that harbored both wild beast and savage, now smile cultivated fields and on the pleasant slopes live his descendants, who, in his memory wish to preserve the old records. Full as they may be, they can never entirely portray the type of man who was able to leave an old civilized section and successfully combat the hardships and face the discouragements incident to establishing a home in an unbroken wilderness."

Taken in part, from "A History of Pickaway county, Ohio and Representative Citizens" by Aaron R. Van Cleaf 1906 pages 469-473. (in quotes) and "The Scothorn Family" by Ralph Lane. This data also came from the Greater Tallman Newsletter Autumn Issue, No. 11 1987, page 2.

Note: The 1850 census actually shows Anna Turner, age 74, living with her granddaughter Catherine (Trone) Long's family. DLB 2012.

Benjamin Tallman

M, b. 9 January 1745, d. 4 June 1820
Note: HISTORY: In about 1778 (during the Revolutionary War), the Tallman family moved from Berks County, Pennsylvania south to the county of Augusta, Virginia, which later became Rockingham County. Possibly they had received favorable reports of that area from Dinah's uncle Squire Boone, who had previously lived there for about a year during his migration to Yadkin Valley, North Carolina. Ben and Dinah settled on Smith's Creek near the town of Harrisonburg. Their homestead at the foot of the Massanutten Mountain was adjoining that of the John Lincoln family who were close kin of the Tallmans. This John Lincoln being the great-grandfather of President Abraham Lincoln, was brother of Anne Lincoln Tallman. William and Anne Lincoln Tallman were parents of Benjamin (1745-1820), the Revolutionary soldier who married Dinah Boone. Benjamin Tallman, having served in the Pennsylvania Militia in 1777, reenlisted as a private from Virginia on March 27, 1782 and served in the Fourth Troop of the first Partisan Legion under Col. Charles Armand Tuffin, marquise de la Rouërie. The Fourth Troop was commanded by Capt. Claudius De Bert. (Ref: Pa. Archives, Series 3, Vol 3, page 152: Series 5, Vol. 3, p. 864 Continental Line, Fifth Pa. Jan 1, 1777-Jan 1, 1783). Benjamin and Dinah Tallman joined the Linville Creek Baptist Church near Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1797, Benjamin was a delegate at a meeting in Loudoun County, of the Ketrockton Baptist Association when a plan was made for gradual emancipation of slaves. About 1810, Benjamin and Dinah removed to Fairfield County, Ohio with others of their family. Their Ohio homestead was near Canal Winchester.
