Former Ventura resident Joseph F. Taylor, 86, of Santa Barbara died Saturday, July 29, 2006, in a Santa Barbara hospital after a brief illness. Dr. Taylor was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Pembroke, Ky., to B. Franklin Taylor and Ruth McGee Taylor. He attended school in Pembroke, grades one through 12, and graduated in 1937. Those were the years of the Great Depression. He went to work that year in a fine department store in Hopkinsville, Ky., as the window and interior display person. Joe began college in 1939 at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky., leaving college in May 1941 to become a naval aviation cadet in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps as an aviator and flew dive-bombers during World War II in the Pacific area. During his career in practice, Joe organized the Ventura County Optometric Society to enhance the intra-professional relations of county optometrists and to improve continued postgraduate education. He maintained the leadership of this organization for 25 years. Joe was elected president of the Tri-Counties Optometric Society in 1963. He was also a member of the California and American Optometric associations. He was an active member of the Ventura Rotary Club for 35 years and was president of that club in 1966-1967. Joe and his wife were members from 1956 until 1995 of First United Methodist Church in Ventura, where he served as head usher for 38 years. They moved to Santa Barbara in 1995 to the Valley Verde Retirement Community and became members of the Santa Barbara First Methodist Church, where they had been married in 1954. Joe is survived by his wife, Peggy Taylor of Santa Barbara, and brother, Ralph W. Taylor of Louisville, Ky. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.

LD Taylor Jr. died on July 9, 2016, in Oklahoma City at the age of 89. He was born in Coleman, TX to L.D. Taylor and Lela Swigert Taylor and was raised near Holdenville, OK through early high school. His family moved to Illinois, where he finished high school. He served his country in the Army during WWII and earned a Bronze Battle Star liberating the Philippines. He returned home to attend Purdue University and obtained a BS in civil engineering. He loved his Boilermakers and the Theta Chi fraternity. Upon graduation, he went to work for the railroad in Ohio. On a blind date, he met the love of his life, Carolyn Kuhls, and he married her May 30, 1954. They moved to Indianapolis, where he joined Boyd E. Phelps Consulting Engineers, designing many bridges and highways throughout Indiana. He considered the White River Bridge his greatest contribution to his community. After achieving an MBA from Indiana University, he became the director of the Indianapolis office of Boyd E. Phelps Consulting. He was a 50-year member of the American Society of Consulting Engineers. Outside of his professional responsibilities, he was an arbitrator for the American Society of Arbitration and the Sunday School Superintendent for Cross and Crown Lutheran Church. After retiring, he enjoyed reading and traveling with his wife until she became ill with Alzheimer's disease and he became her primary caregiver. He loved and was proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed taking them to the Indianapolis Children's Museum and 500 Speedway. In 2010, he moved to Epworth Villa in Oklahoma City, where he made many new friends and regularly won at Bingo. His beloved wife of 56 years, Carolyn Kuhls Taylor, and his sons, Douglas and David Taylor, preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Taylor Albert; son-in-law, Dr. David Albert; grandchildren, Kathryn Albert, Dr. Michael Albert, Carl Albert, Luke Albert; and "granddaughter #2", Callie Albert.
