James Windell1

M, b. 1 January 1864, d. 1 April 1941
James Windell was born on 1 January 1864 at Illinois His father's stated birth location varies with censuses -- 1900 says "Missouri", 1910 says "Illinois", 1920 is illegible, 1930 says "Indiana". Mother's birth location is consistently listed as Illinois.1,2,3 He married Sarah F. (?) circa 1894 at Johnson Co. (probably), TX. James Windell died on 1 April 1941 at Johnson Co., TX, at age 77.1 He was buried in April 1941 at Marystown Cemetery, Johnson Co., TX.
Note: This James Windell has not been found in the 1870 or 1880 censuses. He was most likely a son of James Windell (1840 - 1907) son of Augustine Windle (1816 - 1874) of Harrison County, Indiana. They both settled in the same area of Johnson County, Texas in the late 1800s, and both are buried in Marystown Cemetery. A marriage record for the elder James Windell, preceding his 1871 marriage to Sarah J. Haney, has not been found -- it is possible his first son was illegitimate, or else that an unknown first wife died prior to 1871. (DLB 2005.)

  • Alfred/Albert Cecil Windell+ b. 16 Dec 1910, d. 14 Nov 1978; This relationship is suspected but not documented at this time. John L. B. Windell's first wife Ada Booker had died some time prior to the 1910 census, and John had moved back in with his parents, who were the legal guardians of Katie Hempfling as of April, 1910. He later remarried to India Hunt, relocated to Cincinnati before 1920, and had a family with her there, where he worked as a carpenter. He returned to Harrison County, Indiana before the April, 1930 census, and died there in 1974. In the 1920 census, Elvira (Binkley) Windell was listed as Calvin Ripperdan's mother in-law, but of course she was not Katie Hempfling's mother, she was the grandmother of Alfred/Albert Windell.
