Aged Whitley Countay Woman Dies at Home of Her Son

COLUMBIA CITY. Ind., April 5. -- Mrs. Clara Pence, widow of the late Absolem Pence, and daughter of the late Jacob A. Van Houten, the first circuit court judge in Whitley county, died Wednesday morning, at 7 o'clock, at the home of her son, Jacob E. Pence, of Smith township, after a short illness from ailments attending old age. She was in her 82nd year, coming with her parents from her birthplace in Richland county, Ohio, to Whitley county, Union township, in 1837. She was wedded in 1853 to Absolom Pence, at Concord, Dekalb county, where her family resided for several years, later returning to Union township. The husband died in 1875, and of six children born, two survive, they being the son and Mrs. W. A. Leech, of Smith township. The deceased, the last surviving of eleven brothers and sisters, was a devout Methodist, and the funeral occurs on Friday afternoon at the blue River church, Rev. F. P. Johnson officiating, with interment in the church yard. Six nephews will act as pall-bearers, namely, David, D.L., Joseph Virgil, Charles and James Pence.

John Vanhouten lived on 7 July 1860 at Smith Twp., Whitley Co., IN, farming.¹ He married Lucinda Fritts on 8 January 1870 at Indiana, Lucinda was first married to Andrew J. Karnes (1829 - 1865) on 2 SEP 1852, Morrow County, Ohio, and had children Viola, Melvin, Eda, Ida (deceased before 1870), and Martha "Mattie" Karnes. John Vanhouten died on 3 March 1880 at Union Twp., Whitley Co., IN, at age 56 Lucinda was listed as a widow on the 1880 census, Whitley County. Burial location unknown.

     Wellington Vanhouten was born in 1871 at Whitley Co., IN.¹ He was the son of John Vanhouten and Lucinda Fritts.¹ Wellington Vanhouten died in 1932 married Caroline Kinsey and had six children. He was buried in 1932 at Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Coesse, Whitley Co., IN, Findagrave #35129335.

     Edna Josephine Vanica was born on 10 September 1912 at Lewisburg, Preble Co., OH.¹ She married Julius Wendell Buchholzer, son of Julius Johannes Buchholzer and Kathleen Rachel Shaw.¹ Edna Josephine Vanica died on 6 January 2008 at Akron, Summit Co., OH, at age 95 Obituary (Findagrave.com):

Edna Vanica Buchholzer, 95, passed away peacefully on Jan. 6, 2008 at the Hospice Care Center on Ridgewood Road after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Born on Sept. 10, 1912, in N. Lewisburg, Ohio, Edna moved to Akron with her parents at the age of 4. She graduated from North High School, and began working at Polsky's Department Store in the bookkeeping department. Edna's gifts were many, but her musical talent as a violinist was the foundation on which she "threaded" her life. She joined an all girl orchestra "The Colleens" at age 20. Edna met her future husband, Wendell, while attending North High.

A devoted wife and beloved Mother, Edna and Wendell raised three daughters, Wendy, Karen and Julie. She was a 50 year member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She continued to follow her love of music, sharing her talent by performing in the Akron area. Edna was a guest violinist and played for Gertrude Seiberling at Stan Hywet. She also performed for the Tuesday Musical Club. When her children were grown, Edna began a career as Activity Director at Middlebury Manor Nursing Home where she remained for 33 years. Edna was a member of the Akron Pops Orchestra from 1969-2000. In recent years, she was a strolling violinist at the Akron Civic Theater for the American Heart Association. Edna led by example, her optimism, "zest" for living and compassion for others, all helped to define her character. She will be deeply missed by her family, and lovingly remembered by those whose lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell; daughter, Wendy; sister, Juanita; and brother, Sumner. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Buchholzer Stevens; son-in-law, Thomas Stevens; daughter, Julie Buchholzer; granddaughter, Jenna Stevens Lietke; and great-grandson, Keaton Thomas Lietke.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with the Rev. Derek Starr Redwine officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour before the service. Private interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Edna Josephine Vanica Buchholzer Scholarship (for studies of the violin), The University of Akron Foundation, Akron, OH 44325-2603.

     Sarah Abigail VanMeter was born on 17 August 1891 at Delaware Co., OH.¹ She married Frank William Curtis on 2 July 1910 at Summit Co., OH. Sarah Abigail VanMeter married Arthur Wadley Lee on 17 August 1954 at Summit Co., OH.

     Mary Vann married Caleb Wilson Starr, son of Joseph McMinn Starr and Delilah Adair. Mary Vann was born in 1869. She was the daughter of Yartunnah Vann and Susan Bolin. Mary Vann died on 14 June 1923.

     Dr. Wade Hampton Vann was born in 1878. He married Mary Bell Thornton Starr, daughter of Walter Adair Starr and Ruth Ann Thornton, on 31 December 1905.

     Yartunnah Vann married Susan Bolin.

     Samuel Thomas Vannatta was born on 14 September 1835. He married Lavinna Hawkins, daughter of Isaac Hawkins and Peninah Huddleston, on 29 January 1864. Samuel Thomas Vannatta died on 20 March 1922 at age 86.

     Ruth Hazel VanNice was born on 5 October 1896 at Mediapolis, Des Moines Co., IA. She married Karl John Swygard on 4 August 1915 at Mediapolis, Des Moines Co., IA. Ruth Hazel VanNice died on 27 January 1990 at Sarasota, Sarasota Co., FL, at age 93. She was buried in January 1990 at Kossuth Cemetery, Mediapolis, Des Moines Co., IA, Findagrave #16667984.
