He adored his three granddaughters and enjoyed spending time with family and gardening.
He is survived by his wife Rhonda of Hastings, daughter Becky Carpenter and husband Bryan of Chaska, MN, son, Ryan Wendel and fiance Machelle Blecha both of Lincoln, NE, brother, Greg Wendel and wife Teri from Norfolk, NE, sister, Kathy Ryder and husband Kevin of Lincoln, NE and three granddaughters, Breanna, Makenna and Millie Carpenter all of Chaska, MN, three nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Boyd Sutton and a brother, Terry Wendel.
He was buried in February 2014 at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Adams Co., NE, Findagrave #197793564.

Note: Robert Franklin Wendel received his early education at a preparatory school in Georgetown, Kentucky and his undergraduate and professional education at Washington and Lee University. He was an attorney for the American Water Works Company in Pittsburg and New York City for many years. He spent the last few years of his life in Murfreesoro and is buried there in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery.

Obituary -- Robert Franklin Wendel, who for some years has made his home with his sister, Mrs. R. L. Hay, departed this live on Friday, March 1, about 5:00 p.m. the cumulation of a long illness. He was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the son of Dr. Robert S. and Mrs. Emma James Wendel. His early education was received in the schools of Murfreesboro, and in the preparatory school at Georgetown, Kentucky. His collegiate and professional training at Washington and Lee University at Lexington, Virginia. For many years he was connected with the legal department of the American Waterworks Company in Pittsburgh, Pa., and New York City. Some years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis which unfitted him for the practice of his profession and since then he has made his home with his sister. He was a man of bright intellect, engaging manners, quick wit, abounding good humor, and a high standard of integrity. He loved life, and was patient and brave in his long illness. There was a brief service at the home in Walkerton on Sunday, March 3, at 9:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. Mr. Wilson of the M.E. church and the Rev. Mr. Armstrong of the Presbyterian church, both of Walkerton. Mr. Wendel Nichol, of Nashville, Tennessee, a nephew of the deceased accompanied the body to Murfreesboro for burial.

Dr. Robert Searcy Wendel was born on 14 July 1821 at Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., TN. He was the son of David Wendel and Sarah Hale Neilson. Dr. Robert Searcy Wendel married Emma Claiborne James, daughter of Allen James and Anna Claiborne Wilkinson, on 3 November 1852 at Rutherford Co., TN. Dr. Robert Searcy Wendel lived on 5 August 1870 at Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., TN.1 Occupation:
Dr. Robert Searcy Wendel received his professional education at the Louisville (Kentucky) Institute, where he was awarded degrees on 3 Mar 1841, 3 Feb 1842, and in 1843.
Practiced medicine in Murfreesboro. He and his brother, James Edwy, were charter members of the Rutherford County Medical Society.
Dr. Robert Wendel saw service, as a surgeon, in the Confederate Army. Official records show that he was appointed surgeon on 30 May 1862 to take rank 25 Nov 1862. He served in hospitals in Dalton, Georgia, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Forsythe, Georgia, and Columbus, Mississippi, in that order. He was serving at Forsythe, Georgia when his wife, Emma, and her children were given safe passage to join him. Colonel James A. Garfield, shortly to become Brigadier General Garfield, arrived in Murfreesboro to serve on the staff of USA General Rosecrans and requested the home of the Wendels on the corner of Spring and Main streets for his headquarters. Emma Wendel proceeded to Forsythe, Georgia and later to Columbus, Mississippi where her daughter, Roberta Lee, was born. Following the surrender of Lt. General R. Taylor, CSA, to the USA forces, Robert Searcy was paroled, 16 May 1865 to return home to Murfreesboro.
A family legend has it that a Harrison County, Indiana Windell man who was in the Union Army found himself near Murfreesboro and was aware that a Wendel relative was a doctor in the town. He went to meet Dr. Wendel, but Robert could not abide Yankees, and would not engage in any conversation with the Indiana man.
He died on 24 June 1892 at age 70. He was buried in June 1892 at Evergreen Cemetery, Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., TN.

Some genealogies show an alternate marriage date 29 AUG 1798, a son Wilkins Tatum and a daughter Sarah of this marriage. However these two children are not mentioned in the Red River Settlers. There was a Wilkins Tatum, born about 1805, who lived for decades at P.O. Belles Depot/Bellville, Haywood County, Tennessee, however he consistently reported his birth location as North Carolina. Samuel Wendel was born at the Alzey district (probably), Palatinate, This Samuel Wendel proceeded directly to the Frederick/Shenandoah County area of Virginia where the three sons of Philip Wendel and their children lived. I assume he had some communication with them prior to emigrating from Germany, and had a known familial relationship, but his christening record has not been found. DLB 2016.
He immigrated on 9 October 1747 to Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA; On the ship Restauration from Rotterdam, via Leith, Scotland, James Hall, Captain; settled in Shenandoah Valley near the 3 Wendel brothers Valentine, Augustine, and Christophel Wendel from Framersheim. A Johan Georg Wendel was also on the manifest.
He married Margaret Becker circa 1749 at Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. Samuel Wendel died circa March 1813 at New Market, Shenandoah Co., VA.
