Wendell, William Alloway "Bill" Age 61, of Brewster, MA, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich, MA, from complications of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease). Born in Okinawa, raised in Atlanta, Bill graduated from Dartmouth College in 1970. Mid-career, Bill spent 10 years in various marketing positions with The Gillette Company in Boston and London and Columbian Artworks, later Success Business Industries in Milwaukee. In 2002, Bill retired as Executive Vice-President of the consumer products division of MeadWestVaco in Dayton, OH. After investing in a Providence, RI-based consultancy in 2003, Bill then formed Wendell Marketing, LLC, a Hyannis, MA marketing, advertising, and public relations firm. Currently the Board Chair of the Cape and Islands United Way, Bill has served the community in many volunteer and philanthropic endeavors including the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod and the Duffy Health Center. In 1972, Bill married Ellen Trayers of Boston, MA. Ellen and Bill's son, Patrick, resides in Yarmouth Port, MA. Bill is survived by his mother, Dorothy B. Wendell of Atlanta, GA. He also survived by his Mother-in-law, Frances E. Trayers of Boston, MA, James and Mary Jane Trayers Campbell of Milton, MA, James L. Trayers, Jr. of Boston, MA, Paul E. Trayers of Fairfax, VA, Mark and Elizabeth Trayers Manning of Boston, MA, Edmund B. Trayers of Boca Raton, FL, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and his yellow Labrador, Phinn. As a business and community leader, Bill possessed an amazing blend of intellect and integrity, with an unparalleled knack for making anyone who had the good fortune to know him always feel welcome and worthwhile. Before ALS began to take its toll, Bill was well known and appreciated for his hand-written well wishes and thank you notes; a lost art in these days of electronic communications.      William James Wendell was born on 22 October 1839 at Beaver Twp., Guernsey (now Noble) Co., OH, The military pension record of William J. Wendell indicates a birth location of Urichsville, in Tuscarawas County. This is the only source suggesting that the family of John Wendell and Rebecca Hart ever lived outside Guernsey and Noble Counties. It seems unlikely -- there is no other evidence or anecdotal information suggesting that any of the children of John Wendell were born anywhere other than Guernsey or Noble Counties, most probably in or near Beaver Township. DLB 2008.^1,2

He was the son of John Wendell and Rebecca Hart. William James Wendell began military service on 14 November 1861 : Enlisted as Private, Co. K, 174 Ohio Volunteer Infantry; mustered out 10 November 1862.

Regimental History:
OHIO, ONE HUNDRED and SEVENTY-FOURTH INFANTRY

One Hundred and Seventy-fourth Ohio Volunteer Infantry: Col., John S. Jones; Lieut. Col., A. James Sterling; Majs., Benjamin C. G. Reed, William G. Beatty. This regiment was organized at Camp Chase from Aug. 18 to Sept. 21, 1864 to serve for one year. It was ordered to Nashville, Tennessee and to report to Gen. W. T. Sherman. It reached Nashville on Sept. 26 and was immediately ordered to proceed to Murfreesboro, where it remained until Oct. 27, when it was ordered to report to the commanding officer at Decatur, Alabama. It was then moved to the mouth of Elk River, leaving on the way four companies as a garrison for Athens, Alabama. The regiment soon returned to Decatur, where it remained until Nov. 26, when the town was evacuated. It then returned to Murfreesboro, where it remained during the siege and participated in the battle of Overall's Creek. On Dec. 7 it was engaged in the battle of "The Cedars," and on Jan. 17 moved down the Tennessee and up the Ohio river to Cincinnati. It was then ordered to Washington, D. C., which place it reached on Jan. 29, 1865. It remained in camp at Washington until Feb. 21, when it started for North Carolina, reaching Fort Fisher on the 23d. It marched to Morehead City on the 24th and to New Berne on the 25th. It took part in the battle of Wise's Forks, near Kinston, NC. Under the order mustering out volunteers whose term of service expired previous to Oct. 1, the regiment was mustered out on June 28, 1865.

He ended military service on 10 November 1862.³ He married Susannah A. Jeffery, daughter of Joseph Jeffery and Sarah Ann Talbot, on 21 May 1863 at Noble Co., OH, Ceremony by William D. Lowery.⁴ William James Wendell lived on 8 July 1870 at Oxford Twp., Guernsey Co., OH, lived adjacent to his parents.⁵ He lived in 1880 at Millwood Twp., Guernsey Co., OH.⁶ He lived in 1890 at Barnesville, Belmont Co., OH, appears to have been separated from Susannah as of the 1890 Veterans schedule for the census.³ He lived on 4 June 1900 at 412 Spring Street, Cambridge, Guernsey Co., OH, pensioner.⁷ He lived on 4 April 1910 at 1129 Margaret Avenue, Canton, Stark Co., OH, in son John's household.⁸ He died on 8 November 1911 at Canton, Stark Co. (probably), OH, at age 72. He was buried on 10 November 1911 at Northwood Cemetery, Sec. 8, Lots 35 - 46, Cambridge, Guernsey Co., OH, Findagrave #106642694.
Note: Was living in the household of Thomas Burson as a farm hand at the time of the 1860 census, p.240, adjacent to the farm of Joseph Jeffery, his future father in-law. Thomas Burson's family is in the 1850 census as well, p.205B.

Per card index at Northwood Cemetery, the burial plot was purchased by a John Wendell. This was probably his son (b. 1880), with whom he was living in 1910 at Canton.

The following stories came down to his great-granddaughter Olive R. Wendell, through her father, Earl, a grandson of William J. Wendell:
As a retired widower in Cambridge, every year at Christmas William would go to the market and buy fresh oysters, which were only available at that time of year. He would take these to the home of whichever child he was living with, and ask to have them prepared for oyster stew. Also, he loved to hear a Victrola played in the years before his death. In the families of his children and grandchildren, there were seldom-spoken references to the fact that he and Susanna had not always gotten along very well, and had in fact separated at one point (see the information on Cora's placement in foster care below). The 1890 veteran's census, in which he is found living at Barnesville, indicates he was living alone at that time. Interestingly, in the Northwood cemetery where they are buried, their headstones are facing in opposite directions to this day. DLB 2005.

     William L. Wendell was born in 1908 at Reading Twp., Perry Co., OH.¹ He was the son of Charles Homer Wendell and Bertha A. Wolfe.¹

     William Lawrence Wendell was born on 8 July 1831 at Guernsey Co., OH. He was the son of William D. Wendell and Effie Margaret DeLong.
Note: Possibly this is the William "Wendel" found living in the household of Joseph Wyscarver in Huntington Twp., Ross County, Ohio in the 1850 census. His age is shown as 20, should have been 19 for this William. Joseph Wyscarver is assumed at this time to have been from the Batesville (Beaver Twp., Guernsey (now Noble) County, Ohio) Wyscarvers, probably a brother of Jacob Wyscarver who married this William Wendell's first cousin Rhoda Wendell. DLB 2004. William Lawrence Wendell married Lydia Ann Bevens on 31 January 1857 at Pike Co., OH. William Lawrence Wendell married Anna Catherina Bollinger on 14 February 1872 at Logan Co., IL, 1900 census shows she had 8 children, 6 still living.      William Randolph Wendell was also known as "Butch". He was born in 1941 at Boston, Middlesex Co., MA. He was the son of Robert Lee Wendell and Dorothy Louise Johnson. William Randolph Wendell died on 24 October 1963 at Manhattan, New York Co., NY.

     William Robert Wendell was born on 7 July 1917 at Zanesville, Muskingum Co., OH. He was the son of Ira Daniel Wendell and Mabel O. Graham. William Robert Wendell married Cara Mae Riggle, daughter of Ray Royal Riggle and Vitae Verlanda Norris, on 5 November 1938 at Meigs Co., OH. WILLOUGHBY -- William R. Wendell, 71, of Eastlake died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 1988, at Beufort (sic), S.C.

Mr. Wendell was a resident of Eastlake for 41 years and formerly lived in Zanesville. He was a member of Willoughby Masonic Lodge No. 302 in Willoughby, Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland, Al Koran Shrine in Cleveland and of the Chagrin Lagoons Yacht Club. Mr. Wendell was a former city councilman in Eastlake and retired as president of Schweizer-Dipple Inc. of Cleveland.

He was born July 7, 1917, in Zanesville, a son of the late Ira and Mable (Graham) Wendell.

Surviving are his wife, Cara "Kay" Riggle Wendell; two sons, Robert R. Wendell of Kent and William D. Wendell of Canton; two daughters, Linda Hardy of Eastlake and Beth Wendell of Mentor; and 12 grandchildren.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the Davis Funeral Home in Willoughby, where services will be 1 p.m. Friday with the Rev. William P. Gross officiating. Burial will be in Whitehaven Cemetery in Mayfield Village.

     William Sherman Wendell was also known as "Billy". He was born on 17 December 1867 at Guernsey Co., OH. He was the son of William James Wendell and Susannah A. Jeffery. William Sherman Wendell married Rosa Marie Bragg, daughter of Thomas Hutchison Bragg and Rachel Ann Cornelius, on 17 April 1896 at Guernsey Co., OH, Ceremony by Rev. A. M. Shepperd. Because she was under the age of consent, Rosa's mother signed the marriage license application.¹ William Sherman Wendell lived in June 1900 at Liberty Twp., Guernsey Co., OH,

A Nellie Wendell, age 1, shown as "granddaughter" was living in the household of William Alloway, very near the residence of William and Rosa Wendell, in Liberty Twp., as of the 1900 census (census p.203A). Nellie was the daughter of Dova B. Alloway, unmarried daughter of William and Elizabeth Alloway. A certified copy of Nellie's Guernsey County birth record, signed by her mother, is in the possession of Donald L. Boyd. It shows a pen stroke through the block where the father should have been named. Nellie's father is unproven, but the circumstantial indications suggest strongly that she was an illegitimate daughter of William S. Wendell.

Dova Belle Alloway subsequently married Walter Allender in March, 1902 and in the 1910 census Nellie's age was "adjusted" to indicate a birth year of 1902 or 1903. Nellie Allender married Elihew O'Dowd about 1916, and died in 1971 at Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio. A copy of Nellie's Ohio death certificate is in the possession of Donald L. Boyd -- it shows her father as Walter Allender. Ohio Department of Health, Division of Vital Statistics Death Certificate #075262, Dr. W. The William S. Wendell family migrated to Columbiana County, Ohio sometime in the first decade of the 20th century, continuing as tenant farmers.

The same William and Elizabeth Alloway were still living in Liberty Twp. in 1910. They were found in Wheeling Twp. in the 1880 census.

William S. Wendell was described by his children as being extremely likable, even charming, such that he was easily able to acquire tenant-farmer work, but was subject to losing his money (and perhaps other problems) when under the influence of alcohol, which condition was the subject of a major row with his son Earl at a point in time around 1920, as reported by Earl's daughter Olive Wendell. It seems there was a pattern in William's life of coming home broke and intoxicated, followed nine months later by the birth of another child. In the "counseling" session that happened around 1920, son Earl advised his father that the behavior had to stop, for the sake of the existing children, and in light of the family's serious poverty.²

He lived on 26 April 1910 at Fairfield Twp., Columbiana Co., OH.³ He lived in January 1920 at Jackson Twp., Stark Co., OH.⁴ He died on 12 April 1928 at Canton, Stark Co., OH, at age 60. Cause of death: Pneumonia. He was buried in April 1928 at Forest Hill Cemetery, Canton, Stark Co., OH, Fairmount West Row 14, Findagrave #97509961.

     William Smith Wendell was born in May 1856 at Greene Co., PA, 1900 census, Richhill Twp., Greene Co., P.212.¹ He was the son of Cyrus W. Wendell and Margaret Spears.¹ William Smith Wendell married Martha Ann McCann on 8 September 1880 at Greene Co., PA. William Smith Wendell lived in February 1920 at Madison Twp., Guernsey Co., OH.² He died on 13 September 1920 at Guernsey Co., OH, at age 64.

     Wilma Wendell was born on 26 June 1898 at Corwin, Logan Co., IL. She was the daughter of Alfred J. Wendell and Irene Burrows. Wilma Wendell died on 1 July 1918 at Lincoln, Logan Co., IL, at age 20.

     Wilma Jean Wendell was born on 1 October 1929 at Cambridge, Guernsey Co., OH. She was the daughter of Wilber W. Wendell and Theora Edna Winnett. Wilma Jean Wendell lived in 1999 at Akron, Summit Co., OH. She died on 16 January 2003 at age 73.

     Zula B. Wendell was born circa 1873 at Illinois.¹ She was the daughter of Uriah Wendell and Loretta Bougham.¹

     Note: Ohio marriage records show a Sarah Windell m. Landon Mahoney 28 JAN 1841, Belmont County (DLB 2006.) Wendell was born between 1821 and 1825 at Beaver Twp., Guernsey Co., OH.¹ She was the daughter of William D. Wendell and Effie Margaret DeLong.

     Albert W. Wendle was also known as Bert.¹ He was born in March 1874 at Ogle Co. (probably), IL.¹ He was the son of Lorenzo Washington Wendle and Mary A. Hays.² Albert W. Wendle married Ida Alice Billig, daughter of John Billig and Elizabeth A. Eyrick, in 1901 at Ogle Co., IL, no children. Albert W. Wendle died in 1954.      Alma Genevieve Wendle was born on 22 October 1901 at Ridgeway, Ouray Co., CO. She was the daughter of Frank Roy Wendle and Bernice Pettit Brockway. Alma Genevieve Wendle married Thomas Carmin Robinson, son of William Carmin Robinson, on 21 November 1929 at Seattle, King Co., WA. Alma Genevieve Wendle died on 11 February 1996 at Phoenix, Maricopa Co., AZ, at age 94.

     Anna Ethelyn Wendle was born on 22 August 1885 at Ogle Co., IL.¹ She was the daughter of Lorenzo Washington Wendle and Mary A. Hays.¹ Anna Ethelyn Wendle married Charles H. Trump, son of Henry Trump and Mary Bowers, on 28 November 1912 at Polo, Ogle Co., IL. Anna Ethelyn Wendle died in August 1951 at Dixon, Lee Co., IL.      Chud Woods Wendle was born on 15 June 1909 at Sandpoint, Bonner Co., ID. He was the son of Dr. Floyd Garfield Wendle and Susie Bell Jones. Chud Woods Wendle married Charlotte Rowena Ginn, daughter of Walter B. Ginn and Bessie E. Miller, on 5 September 1936 at Seattle, King Co., WA. Occupation: Owner/operator of Wendle Ford Town auto dealership at Spokane, Spokane Co., WA. Chud Woods Wendle died on 18 October 2003 at Spokane, Spokane Co., WA, at age 94.

     Dr. Clinton Cornelius Wendle was also known as "Neal". He was born on 10 January 1904 at Chicago, Cook Co., IL. He was the son of Dr. Floyd Garfield Wendle and Susie Bell Jones. Dr. Clinton Cornelius Wendle was graduated; B.S., University of Idaho. He was degree M.D., Northwestern University. He married Gladys Cora Bower on 12 May 1933 at King Co., WA. Dr. Clinton Cornelius Wendle began military service in 1941 U.S. Army, China-Burma-India Theater, WW II. He died on 18 October 1983 at Phoenix, Maricopa Co., AZ, at age 79.

     Dallas H. Wendle was born in September 1872 at Ogle Co. (probably), IL.^2,1 He was the son of Lorenzo Washington Wendle and Mary A. Hays.² Dallas H. Wendle married Louisa Belle Mulnix, daughter of John T. Mulnix and Rachel Louise Schryver, on 30 September 1902 at Polo, Ogle Co., IL, no children. Dallas H. Wendle died on 21 May 1938 at age 65.      Faye Cornelius Wendle was born on 30 November 1899 at Iowa. He was the son of Frank Roy Wendle and Bernice Pettit Brockway. Faye Cornelius Wendle married Anna Pearl Rainey on 9 November 1929.      Dr. Floyd Garfield Wendle was born on 16 February 1882 at Moline, Rock Island Co., IL. He was the son of Rev. Cornelius Windle and Marrietta L. Woods. Dr. Floyd Garfield Wendle married Susie Bell Jones, daughter of Philip Clinton Jones and Jessie Catherine Stoner, on 17 November 1902 at Toledo, Tama Co., IA.      Frank Roy Wendle was born on 10 January 1878 at Mendota, LaSalle Co., IL.¹ He was the son of Rev. Cornelius Windle and Marrietta L. Woods.
