LYONS - Loren E. Wiens, 85, died Sept. 22, 2013, at Rice County District Hospital, Lyons. He was born Dec. 11, 1927, in Lyons, Kan., the son of Peter and Lanah Long Wiens.
A Lyons resident since 2007, formerly 80 year rural Chase resident, he was a retired farmer-stockman, later years helping his wife, Phyllis, at the S.H.E. Shoppe in Lyons. He graduated from Chase High School in 1945 and received a bachelor's degree in business from Kansas State College, which later became KSU. He was a member of Theta Xi fraternity. State Farm Insurance hired Loren directly from the campus at the frat house to sell insurance, though according to Loren, provided absolutely no training on how to do so. He then worked at Gambles in Kansas City for a short period, then moved on to sell tractor parts for a Kansas City-based company, covering the state of Kansas. He moved to Wichita thereafter to take a job at Beechcraft and he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His memberships included: Community Presbyterian Church, Chase, where he served as an Elder, currently Trustee, former Treasurer; 1960 to 2008 he was Lincoln Township Board Trustee; board member, Bushton Grain & Supply from 1981 to 1989; Chase Co-op Board from 1965 to 1974, including service as president from 1969 to 1973; He was a 60-year Mason, joining the Masonic Lodge of Frederick, and then Chase and most recently at Lyons. He is remembered fondly as a loving husband, father and friend to all he met.
On Nov. 16, 1952, he married Phyllis M. Schardein in Hutchinson. She died Oct 12, 2011. Survivors include: daughter, Jacque Charisse Wiens of Lyons; his Aunt Rose Hurd, 108 years old, Ehrlinger, Ky; and four nephews, Doug Sykes of Longmont, Colo., Stan Sykes of Austin, Texas, Ken McFarland and Kevin McFarland, both of Nickerson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Leland Kurt Wiens, Aug 3, 1964, at Fort Morgan, Colo; and a sister, Eulalia Marlene Wiens Sykes.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Community Presbyterian Church, Chase, with the Revs. Jesse and Arlene Patrick officiating. Burial will be in Lyons Municipal Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Navy and Masonic Graveside Service.
