Employees at A. B. White Store Battled Steam Tuesday Morning

Lots of steam issuing from the basement department of the A. B. White store Tuesday morning was the cause for considerable worry for two employees, Henry Westerbeck and Roy Lowder.

Shortly after the fire was built a heavy blanket of steam filled the upper half of the lower room and they found it necessary to crawl on hands and knees to reach the light switch in order that they might see just what was the trouble.

They found that the large radiator made of long three to four inch pipes constructed in an L-shape and which was suspended from the ceiling had fallen during the night. Steam was escaping at the points where the radiator had been connected. All the radiators were turned off and the places closed where the steam was escaping.

Since the radiator was hung above an aisle not much damage resulted from the fall although the steam dampened a few articles.

WASTE FATS --- NEEDED TO MAKE EXPLOSIVES

The need is urgent. War in the Pacific has greatly reduced our supply of vegetable fats from the Far East.? ? It is necessary to find substitutes for them.? Fats make glycerine. And Glycerine makes explosives for us and our allies --- explosives to down Axis planes, stop their tanks, sink their ships.?We need millions of pounds of glycerine and housewives of America can help supply them.

Henry Westerbeck,
County Chairman.

FOUR THINGS TO DO

1. Save all your waste cooking fats after you've got all the cooking good out of them. Save pan drippings from roast ham, beef, lamb and poultry. Save broiler drippings from steaks, chops, veal and bacon. Save deep fats, whether lard or vegetable shortening from fried potatoes, fish, donuts, etc.

2.? ? Pour into clean, wide-mouth can. It is best to pour into a wide-mouthed can, as a coffee or vegetable shortening can. Be sure the can is spotlessly clean.? ? And strain your fats as you pour them in, so that meat particles and other foreign matter are removed.

3. Keep in refrigerator, or a cool, dark place until you have collected at least 1 pound.

4.?Take to your meat dealer listed below who is cooperating patriotically in this drive. He will weigh your can of fat, pay you the established price of 4¢ per pound for it, and start it on its way to the war industries.

FOUR THINGS NOT TO DO

1.? ? Don't take less than 1 pound to your meat dealer.

2.? ? Don't take your fats to the meat dealer in glass containers, paper bags or cartons, if you have anything else that will serve.

3. Don't let fats stand so long that they become rancid. If they do, the glycerine content is reduced.

4.? ? Don't take your fats to the meat dealer on week ends if you can avoid it. help him by returning them early in the week.
