Raymond Leland Wilton
M, b. 6 June 1909, d. 13 January 1997
Raymond Leland Wilton was born on 6 June 1909 at Hawarden (probably), Sioux Co., IA,
Raymond's parents were unmarried, and there is no evidence that Edgar H. Sniffen was aware that he had a child from Gertrude E. Moniger. Edgar was a traveling wholesale wallpaper salesman as of the 1910 census, living at Omaha, Nebraska, unmarried.
The identity of Raymond's father was established from DNA matching between one of his children and a great-grandchild of Edgar H. Sniffen. Conflicting evidence exists for Raymond's birth year, although there is no reason to doubt that his birthday was June 6. The earliest evidence is the spring 1915 Iowa state census, mis-indexed as Ray "Welton", in which he was listed as age 5. The January 1920 Federal census, in which he was listed as age 10 "as of last birthday", indicates a birth year of 1909. By April 1930 he was married and living on his own, and in that census he was listed as age 21, again suggesting 1909. In the April 1940 census he was listed as age 30. His WW II draft registration shows 6 JUN 1908, and that is a match to his Social Security account information. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has a BIRLS listing that shows the same birth date, and documents U.S. Navy service during 1926-1929 and again during 1944-1945. He applied for the WW II veterans bonus on 9 SEP 1949, and that application again shows 6 JUN 1908, so it is safe to say that either (a) he believed his birth date was 6 JUN 1908, or (b) he chose deliberately to use that date consistently after his 1926 enlistment in the Navy. A daughter believes he gave the 1908 date on military enlistment paperwork in order to be accepted into the Navy in 1926, which would not be surprising given his very unhappy relationship with his step-father. DLB 2021.1
He was the son of Edgar Howland Sniffen and Gertrude Emily Moniger.1 Raymond Leland Wilton married Marie Frederick, daughter of Charles Frederick and Isabelle Ruth Cook, on 13 October 1929 at Union Co., SD, This marriage was over, with no surviving children, before May, 1934, when Raymond remarried to Dorothy Meuleveld.
Raymond Leland Wilton lived in April 1930 at Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA.2 He and Marie Frederick were divorced. Raymond Leland Wilton married Dorothy Anna Meuleveld, daughter of Jacob Meuleveld and Josephine Katherine Lutgen, on 12 May 1934 at Clay Co., SD, This marriage had ended prior to the April 1940 Federal census, when Dorothy and her daughter Jo Ann Wilton were living with her parents and Raymond was living alone, both in Sioux City.
Raymond Leland Wilton lived on 5 April 1940 at 101 West Seventh, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA, age 30, "M" but it has a strike-through and he was living alone, observer, weather bureau.3 He and Dorothy Anna Meuleveld were divorced; Dorothy and Raymond were separated but not yet divorced by April, 1940, as per their 1940 census listings. This divorce was acrimonious, according to Raymond's daughter Margo Harvey, in part because Raymond was in the hospital with tuberculosis at the time.
Raymond Leland Wilton began military service WW II service, U.S. Navy, QM3. Ray also served an earlier enlistment in the Navy during 1926-1929, per the Department of Defense BIRLS index. He was disabled as a result of his WW II service. He lived in February 1949 at Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO, per marriage license announcement. He married Gladys Ruth McClain, daughter of Roy Charles McClain and Pearl Mary Chase, on 12 February 1949 at Oakdale, Johnson Co., IA, license announcement in the Des Moines Tribune, Des Moines, Iowa; Friday, 18 FEB 1949, p.15 (Newspapers.com):
