92-Year-Old Center Point Woman Dies

Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Dye, 92, who as a child was behind the lines at the battle of Gettysburg, which was fought near her childhood home in Maryland, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. James Van Fossen, in Center Point at 2:10 a.m. Friday after an extended illness. She was Center Point's oldest resident.

Mrs. Dye, to whom war was an old story, having seen American boys march off to four conflicts, recalled how her mother used to feed passing Civil war soldiers fresh bread, piping hot, from the oven, and how southern soldiers waited not to be served, but pillaged their home for food.

Born at Hanover, Penn., Aug. 12, 1852, Mrs. Dye moved to Shellsburg at the age of 18 and in 1881 was married to Plimpton Dye. Several years later they moved to Center Point, where her son, William, was born. He fought in the Spanish-American war.

Another son, Clifford was killed in France in 1918, and the Center Point Legion post is name for him. Two grandsons, Carl and Orville Dye of Center Point are fighting in this war.

Her husband and two sons having preceded her in death. Mrs. Dye is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Van Fossen and Mrs. John Baumgartner, and a son, William M. Dye, all of Center Point; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Christian church of Center Point and the American Legion auxillary, and she was a Gold Star mother.

The body will be taken from the Beatty chapel in Cedar Rapids to Center Point, where services will be held at the Christian church at a time to be announced later.

She's Seen 4 Wars Go By

Special to The Gazette,

CENTER POINT -- War is an old, repeated story for Mrs. Catherine Dye, 92, who has seen American youth march off to fight in four of the nation's conflicts.

She still recalls the eventful battle of Gettysburg, fought near her childhood home in Maryland. She remembers how her mother used to feed the passing soldiers fresh bread, piping hot from the oven; how other soldiers from the South waited not to be served but pillaged their home for food.

But her memories of the Civil war are but a little girl's dreams -- wistful, nebulous and far away. And for that reason she cherishes a small red book autographed by Walter B. Thomas, a Northern officer, which he gave her, a child of 12, as he marched by.

Lived in Shellsburg

Moving to Shellsburg at the age of 18, she was married in 1881 to Plimpton Dye. They lived in that locality for many years before coming to Center Point.

It was while there that her son, William, was born and by the time he had grown to manhood war again came to the United States. Her boy was sent overseas to fight in the Spanish American war -- a thing unheard of at that date. The methods of communication were so remote that Mrs. Dye knew nothing of her son's whereabouts for months at a time. But soon it was over and William returned unhurt.

Then came World War I. By that time another son was ready to fight for his country. Clifford this time went overseas. He was killed in France in 1918, and in his honor the Center Point American Legion post was named.

That was the war to end wars, and Mrs. Dye hoped it would be so. But as her grandchildren grew up, another war grew upon the people of the world. Carl and Orville Dye, her grandsons who live just across the street, went off to fight. And she was proud of them.

No, war is nothing new to Mrs. Dye.
