Winchester, Virginia - Streets-churches-Schools, Garland R. Quarles Published by Winchester-Frederick Co. Historical Society Winchester Va 1996 (Provided by Marjorie Windle Mains after a trip to this location letter dated 10/25/1997).
In 1664, Charles II of England granted to seven of his court favorites a large area of the Virginia Colony, consisting of all the land lying between the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers., from their mouths to their head springs. This grant, as a result of deeds of conveyance, passed into the hands of Alexander Lord Culpeper, and from him to his daughter, Catherine, who married the fifth Lord Fairfax. In 1710, the grant passed to the son of Lady Fairfax, Thomas Lord Fairfax. ... either in ignorance of the Fairfax claims or in defiance of them.. large numbers of settlers received grants in the Winchester area including James Wood. Wood's grant was for 1300 acres and included a substantial part of the site of Winchester. This property was laid out in lots, numbering 1-26. Lot 22 was purchased by John and Eve Windle, on the corner of Germain/German Street and Loudoun St.
...We have examined the original patents of Lord Fairfax and James Wood to the owners of the first 9 lots. Their names were: John Buckleys, Joseph Baker, John Michael Ritter, John Grim, John Windle, Charles Grim...
What I know about Winchester: Recollections of William Greenway Russell 1800-1891 (Provided by Marjorie Windle Mains as above)
...Next is the residence of John Windle who was a blacksmith, and a number one workman. He had two sons Adam and Alfred, and one daughter, who married Caleb Messer, who had both hands blown off by accident, while blasting on the hill, where stood the old market house. (Curiously in this same publication, it stated that John Windle and son Jacob as town blacksmiths.? Could be his son in law Jacob Carper?)

Conveyance to Johns son Alfred. Adam, Johns other son and his wife Susan, William Windle and Margaret, Nicholas Windle and his wife Catharine, and Johns daughter Libby with husband Caleb Messer grant conveyance to Alfred.
