Serena Pearl Windle

F, b. 12 January 1865, d. 14 April 1947
Note: Jenkins Family since 1795 by Edna E. Purvis c. 1955

Alec and Serena were married at the home of Serenas father Dr. Jacob H. Windle on January 1st, 1884. Alec was then 23 years of age and Serena just shy of her 19th birthday. The young couple began housekeeping in jackson county on a farm belonging to Alec's grand father. Here also, their first child Walter was born. Soon after his birth in 1885, the family moved to Rarden where the Windles lived. Sirena's father was the local physician in Rarden and was a familiar figure around the countryside as he traveled from patient to patient by horse and buggy. Shortly after arriving in Rarden, Alec built a home there and made a living working three mule teams cutting and hauling timber for the railroads being built. During the winter of 1885, Alec's brother George had moved to Kansas, and through correspondence between them, Alec decided to try his luck in the newly settled territory. In March 1892, he moved his his family west and went to join his brother in Pratt, Kansas. There were four children at that time: Walter, Essie, Charley, and Leslie. As the little family made preparations to leave, Alec sold all of their possessions including the mule teams, equipment and even the home he had built. They made the trip by train, and when they arrived, Alec began to farm with his brother George. In the fall of that same year, another child was born to them. Dessie was the only one of their ten children born out of the state of Ohio. It wasn't long before Alec realized that this windswept tornado country wasn't for going to be his permanent home. In the spring of 1895 the family again boarded the train and headed back home to Rarden. Now they had to start all over and Alec had to take what work was available. He did some farming, teaming, and hauled timber montly for someone else. The venture to Kansas proved to be costly for them and Alec had to work very hard to make ends meet, especially as three more children were born over the next six years. Faye was born in the fall of the year they came back from Kansas, and Magdaline was born in 1899, along with Dora in 1901.
Alec had a sister Juda, and she was married to Edward Lamb. Juda and Edward lived in Union county near Mechannicsburg where the farming land was rich and held a promise of success. Since Alec was looking for a prospect and opprtunity to advance, he decided to again move his family to Tradersville in 1902. Here they remained for the next nine years, and two more children were born, Marie in 1906 and Ronald in 1910.
In 1911, Alec again moved his family, this time to Sandusky, Ohio. Alec worked on the farm of Mr. Dills for the next five years on a sharecrop basis and was then able to buy his own farm in 1916. He had 40 acres about two mile south of Vickrey, Ohio. Alec farmed here for the next five years, and by that time all of the boys were married and supporting their own families, and Alec realized he could not do the work any more by himself. He bought a small grocery store in Vickrey and rented his farm to his son Charlie. The grocery and meat market was attached to his home, and he remained here for the last nine years of his life. He was returning from the barber shop a few doors from his home on June 13, 1930 and suffered a severe heart attack causing his death. He was buried at McPherson Cemetery at Clyde, Ohio.
Sirena lived many more years and enjoyed good health. On April 14, 1947 she passed away and was laid beside Alec. Serena Pearl Windle was born on 12 January 1865 at Scioto Co., OH. She was the daughter of Dr. Jacob Hillyard Windle and Sarah A. James. Serena Pearl Windle married Alexander Jenkins, son of Newberry Jenkins and Rachel Marker, on 1 January 1884 at Home of her father, Rarden Twp., Scioto Co., OH. Serena Pearl Windle died on 14 April 1947 at age 82. She was buried in April 1947 at McPherson Cemetery, Clyde, Sandusky Co., OH.
