Garfey William Zach, Jr., 78, of the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House died Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the hospice house following a long illness.

Garfey was born January 21, 1930 in Cedar Rapids the son of Garfey William Zach Sr. and Esther DeShaw Zach. He married Kay Carol Schneider on April 9, 1954 in Cedar Rapids.

He was a fork-lift driver with Allis Chalmers and with Harnischfeger Corp. for 35 years. He loved everything about farms, and drove the gravel roads to look at the cows and horses. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Meyers Mark of Cedar Rapids; a son, Matthew Zach of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Amanda, Audra, Ann, Leif, Kallie, Angela, Andrew and Dillon; six great grandchildren, Alivia, Audriana, Amira, Alysia, Layla and Addison; two sisters, Kathleen Sexton and Judy Phillips Robert both of Cedar Rapids; and a brother, Marvin Zach Pat of Cedar Rapids.


He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Kay, and two daughters, Jean Zach and Diane McMurrin.

Services: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. William Harnish will officiate.

Got Her Wish

A Cedar Rapids woman was arrested Monday on charges of intoxication, interfering with official acts and criminal mischief after she insisted that police arrest her along with a friend.

Events began when police were called to the Joseph Mara residence, 921 16th Ave. SE, on a complaint of damage to a wooden fence. According to the police report, two men were sliding on ice in a driveway adjacent to the Mara fence, crashing into the fence and breaking it.

Police arrested Donald N. Cantonwine, 18, of 1134 10th St. SE, on charges of intoxication and criminal mischief. The second man, unidentified, fled in a car.

In Cantonwine's company was Jean Marie Zach, 19, of 1026 15th St. SE. The report said that as officers placed Cantonwine under arrest, Zach told officers she too was intoxicated and should be arrested.

She then leaned against the back door of the police car to prevent officers from putting Cantonwine into the car. Zach refused to move away from the door and was subsequently placed under arrest.

Police said she physically resisted arrest and had to be forced into the back seat of the vehicle for transportation to the Linn jail.

Donald H. Cantonwine, Jr., 33, of 1131 10th St. SE, pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily injury (domestic abuse), penalty enhanced. He was accused of striking Jean Zach in the face during a July 12, 1993, incident at 1261 Fourth Ave. SE. The defendant was fined $250 and sentenced to 48 hours in jail.

     Mary (Polly) Zachary married John Corr.

     Gwendolyn Maxine Zahn was born on 8 February 1924 at Ellis Co. (probably), OK.¹ She was the daughter of Vernal Lewis Zahn and Beulah Elizabeth Julia Wegner. Gwendolyn Maxine Zahn married Charles Wahlfred Young on 3 July 1943 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co., OK; after their divorce, Gwendolyn remarried to Harold E. Weir (1922 - 1996) and Charles remarried to Evelyn Louise McLean (1923 - 1995). Charles and Evelyn had a son, C. W. Young, Jr., and lost an infant daughter in 1963.

Gwendolyn Maxine Zahn and Charles Wahlfred Young were divorced. Gwendolyn Maxine Zahn lived in 1996 at Troutdale, Multnomah Co., OR. She died on 29 August 2011 at age 87. She was buried in 2011 at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah Co., OR, Findagrave #190098509.

     Louis Zahn was born on 1 August 1868 at Morgan Co., IL; son of Johann Friedrich and Margaret (Hohenstein) Zahn. He married Minerva Retta Starr, daughter of Nehemiah Davis Starr and Henrietta Hadley, on 5 December 1889 at Canton, Lewis Co., MO. Zahn Services Held Monday

Funeral services for Louis Zahn, pioneer businessman of northwestern Oklahoma, were at 2 p.m. Monday in the Sharon Methodist church with Rev. J. C. Watson, pastor of the church officiating. Burial was in the Fargo cemetery with final Masonic rites conducted by Charity Lodge No. 254, AF&AM.

Mr. Zahn died early Saturday morning at his home in Sharon following a heart attack. He was born Aug. 1, 1868 in Morgan county, Ill. He came to Oklahoma in 1895 and settled in Kay county. In 1903 he moved to Fargo and established the Fargo Grain and Supply company. He operated the business until 1931 when he sold out and moved to Sharon where he operated the Zahn Grain company until his death.

In 1889 he was united in marriage to Minnie Starr who preceded him in death. On Dec. 25, 1931 he was united in marriage to Carrie E. Conway of Sharon, Okla. He was a member of the Methodist church.

He was a charter member of Charity Lodge No. 252, AF&AM at Fargo and recently received his 50 year membership pin.

Survivors include his wife Carrie of the home in Sharon, one daughter Valma Zahn, Gage; one son, Vernal, Fargo; also one step-daughter Levira C. Canaday, Los Angeles, and two step sons, Theo. J. Conway, Eagle Point, Ore., and Harold C. Conway, Compton, Calif; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were by the Byron Mason Funeral Home.

Vernal L. Zahn

Vernal L. Zahn, 78, a former local resident and father of Mrs. A. Harry Roberts of Shreveport, died Friday in Woodward, Okla., following a long illness.

Mrs. Roberts is the wife of former FBI agent A. Harry Roberts, now president of Southern Research Co.

A former longtime rancher in Woodward, Mr. Zahn made his home here for several years with Mrs. Roberts.

Mr. Zahn, member of a pioneer Oklahoma family, was born in Kahoka, Mo., in 1893 and moved with his family the the Newkirk community in the Oklahoma territory in 1895. The family established the present Zahn ranch in Woodward in 1905.

In addition to farming and ranching, Mr. Zahn served on various federal and state boards and commissions pertaining to agricultural activities.

For many years he and his father owned and operated Zahn and Son Grain and Lumber Co. Until his illness he had been an active member of Woodward Methodist Church, serving as deacon and later as lay minister. He was a Mason and Pat Worshipful Master of Charity Lodge 254. He was president of Blue Ridge Telephone Co. for many years, was a past president of his Chamber of Commerce and of Woodward Memorial Park. He was a member of the American Legion.

In addition to his daughter here, Mr. Zahn is survived by another daughter, Mrs. Harold Weir, Portland, Ore; five grandchildren, Mrs. Mary Beth Roberts Ellis of Metairie, La., Mrs. Nancy Anna Roberts Swann, Shreveport, Mrs. James Benson, Alva, Okla., Captain Richard Young and Suzahn Weir, and two great grandsons and a granddaughter.

Interment will be at Fargo Memorial Park, Monday at 2 p.m. under the direction of Stetcher Funeral Home of Woodward, Okla.

     Mark Sonner Zainhofsky was born on 3 May 1954 at Sacramento Co., CA. He was the son of Peter R. Zainhofsky and Ethel Lorraine Sonner. Mark Sonner Zainhofsky died on 15 February 2008 at Reno, Washoe Co., NV, at age 53.

     Peter R. Zainhofsky was born on 23 January 1901 at Russia. He was the son of Albert Zainhofsky and Lucia (?)¹ Peter R. Zainhofsky married Ethel Lorraine Sonner, daughter of Clarence Albertus Sonner and Nan Gene Adams, on 13 December 1951 at Solano Co., CA. Peter R. Zainhofsky died on 10 July 1976 at Sacramento Co., CA, at age 75. Marybell B. Mernik -- Age 80, of Spanish Fort, AL, passed away at home on May 8, 2003. Marybell was born in Minneapolis, MN on September 15, 1922 to Hugo W. and Charlotte O. Zander. She was married to Walter J. Mernik for 56 years before he preceded her in death on August 14, 1997. Mom and Dad moved to Gulf Shores, AL when they purchased Sea Horse Resort. She gave the Pink Pony Pub its name in 1968. Mom was a true sports enthusiast with Alabama at the top of her list. She was the All-American Mom-Room Mother, Girl Scout Leader, Team Supporter, PTA Member, Everybody's Mom-whose family and children always came first. We will all miss her dearly.

She is survived by four children and spouses, Bill and Madeleine Mernik; Tammy and Wayne Chisenhall; Bruce and Annette Mernik; and Debby and Dave Dalton; ten grandchildren, Shelly, Bill, Mark, JB, Gar, Tammy, Marcy, Kerry, Sherry, and DJ; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Marybell Mernik are Monday, May 12, 2003 at 2pm from Bayview Funeral Home in Daphne, AL with burial in Memory Gardens of Fairhope. Mrs. Mernik will lie in state from 1pm until 2pm before service. In lieu of flowers, as a true animal lover, Mom would have liked contributions to be made to the Baldwin County Humane Society.
