dies at age 69

Betsy B. Metzger, 69, of Columbus and a retired Wapakoneta teacher, died at 1 p.m. August 1 in Riverside Hospital, Columbus.
Mrs. Metzger taught in the Wapakoneta School System from 1949 to 1976. A 1930 graduate of New Holland High School, she was graduated in 1932 from Wilmington College and taught in New Holland. In 1949 she moved to Wapakoneta and taught there until her retirement in 1976. In 1980 she moved to Columbus.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Wapakoneta, St. Johns Garden Club and a past matron of Koneta Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, 385.
Born in Ganado, TX she was the daughter of Stawder and Georgia Briggs. On November 5, 1953, she was married to Leroy R. Metzger, who died December 25, 1971.
Survivors include a son, Martin B. of Columbus; and a sister, Mrs. Forrest (Wilma) McCune of New Holland.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Adams officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Wapakoneta.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Charles D. Siferd Funeral Home where Koneta Chapter, OES, 385 will hold memorial services at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials may be directed to the church or the American Heart Association.

Mrs. Betsy B. Metzger

WAPAKONETA - Mrs. Betsy Briggs Metzger, 69, of Columbus, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.
Mrs. Metzger was a retired elementary school teacher with 36 years of service in the Frankfort and Pickaway County school systems before joining the Wapakoneta City School District.* She was a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Wapakoneta United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Metzger, in 1971.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Wilma B. McCune, of New Holland; two sons, Billy Joe Briggs, of New Holland, and Martin Briggs Metzger, of Columbus, and two grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Wapakoneta United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Wapakoneta Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Siferd Funeral Home, Wapakoneta, from 2 to 4 and 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday. Eastern Star services will be held at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Strawder C. Briggs, 81, of New Holland-Good Hope Road, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Fayette Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Friday.
He was born in Fayette County near Bloomingburg on May 9, 1884, and had lived in the New Holland community most of his life. He was the son of William and Elizabeth James Briggs and was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Trotter Briggs, in 1916. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Leroy Metzger, of Wapakoneta, and Mrs. Forrest McCune, of the Dogtown Road; two sisters, Mrs. Annalee Stinson, of the New Holland-Good Hope Road, and Mrs. Willard Peterson, of Frankfort; one brother, Dudley, of the Clemens Road; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Mr. Briggs, a retired farmer, was a member of the New Holland Masonic Lodge No. 392, Purity Chapter No. 65, Eastern Star, and the Eagle Lodge in Washington C.H.
Funeral services will be held at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Orlo Freshly officiating. Burial will be in New Holland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Services for Strawder C. Briggs, 81, of the New Holland-Good Hope Rd., were held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home, with the Rev. Orlo Freshly, pastor of the New Holland Methodist Church, officiating. Briggs, a retired farmer, died last Tuesday.
Pallbearers for the burial in New Holland Cemetery were Charles, Albert, and Martin Peterson, Dr. Byron Stinson, Dr. Dustin Stinson, Dr. Joseph Herbert and Paul Minshall.

Par. 1st That plaintiff and defendant are both residents of Jones County Iowa and have resided in said ______ ever since the marriage of plaintiff and defendent as hereinafter stated.

Par. 2. That plaintiff and defendant were married in Fairview Township, Jones County, Iowa on the 3rd day of July AD1879.

Par. 3rd That ever since said marriage plaintiff has conducted herself towards said defendant as a loving and affectionate wife.

Par. 4th That the defendant disregarding his duties as a husband, has conducted himself towards plaintiff and has treated plaintiff in such a cruel and inhuman manner as to endanger the life and utterly destroy the peace and happiness of plaintiff. That about six months after said marriage of said parties, __ _____, December 1879 without any provocation on the part of plaintiff said defendant gave way to anger and passion and did swear at plaintiff and call her vile and obscene names. That said defendant did attempt to cut his own throat with a razor and with a knife. That plaintiff for fear of her life was compelled to lock herself up in a room and remain until released, that since said time defendant has failed nearly altogether to provide for his family, that plaintiff has been compelled to support herself and her family, that defendant has continued to give way to violent passions and anger since said date, Dec. 1879 at intervals and becoming more frequent until the present time, that now said defendant is almost continually doing all in his power to harass, annoy and injure plaintiff. That in the month of June 1883 said defendant held the lamp right close to plaintiff's face when plaintiff was in bed and rubbed his fist against plaintiff's face and nose at the time threatening violence to plaintiff using vile and obscene language, that plaintiff was compelled to flee from her house and seek safety. That defendant threatens plaintiff that he would report to the neighbors false statements as to what plaintiff has said about them for the purpose of making them angry with plaintiff, that deft. has done so and this has caused nearly all plaintiff neighbors to be unfriendly with plaintiff. That defendant prevents plaintiff from attending religious services, that on the 6th day of April 1884, Deft. would not permit plaintiff to attend the funeral of a friend, that in the evening of April 6th defendant for the purpose of annoying plaintiff, the said day being the sabbath said defendant did continue to dance in the room and sing silly and vulgar songs and did use threatening and vulgar language, said defendant did call the daughter of plaintiff a "freckled whore." That because of the said threats and actions of defendant plaintiff has not been able to sleep but little for a week past and her health is affected thereby, that she will endanger her life to continue to live with said defendant.

Par. 5th That this application is not made out of any _____ or restraint but in sincerity and truth for the purposes set forth herein.

Par. 6th Wherefore plaintiff asks that she may be divorced from said defendant, that her name may be changed to her former name, Nancy Harrison, and that she may have such other and further relief as may be just and equitable in the premises.

Wilma G. McCune
NEW HOLLAND, Ohio - Services for Mrs. Wilma G. McCune, 71, of 41 South Church St., will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in New Holland, with the Rev. Victor Slutz officiating. Burial will be in the New Holland Cemetery.
Mrs. McCune died at 11:53 p.m. Saturday in Fayette County Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient three days. She had been ill one month.
She was born in Ganado, Texas (the daughter of Strawder C. and Georgia K. (Trotter) Briggs), but had spent most of her life in the New Holland community where she was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Heber Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Williamsport, a former beautician and had worked as an aide at Orient State Institute.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest McCune on Feb. 13, 1978, and a sister, Mrs. Betsy Metzger (on Aug. 1, 1981).
Surviving is a son, William McCune, of Jackson, Ky; three daughters, Mrs. Janie (David) Sprouse, of Circleville, Mrs. Georgia (Carl) Miller, of Howard, Ohio, and Mrs. Barbara (John) Johnson, of Chesapeake, Va; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the funeral home in New Holland on Monday from 4 until 9 p.m., where Eastern Star services will be held at 8:30 p.m.
