Cecil Duane Colby

Note: Cecil grew up on a farm 2 miles south of Smith Center Kansas. In 1928 he attended the University of Nebraska with a goal of becoming a coach (played football there for one semester). Because of the Depression, he returned to Smith Center where he worked in the Smith County court house and started dating Josephine Francis. They married in 1936 and in 1942 with daughter Lyntha moved to Spokane, Washington where Cecil worked 1 ½ years as a carpenter at an aluminum rolling mill (Eldon ,Virginia and daughter Marilyn were there at that time because Eldon was stationed there with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. After he fell and broke his heel, Cecil quit and returned for a brief home visit to Smith County before moving to Iowa. According to Josephine, Cecil always wanted to farm in Iowa, so after the war, they moved to a farm near Ackley and lived there for the next 52 years. Parents Vergie and Merrill Colby joined them in the late 40s. Cecil was an avid sportsman: played golf and participated in archery club-making his own bows and arrows. He was born on 30 August 1910 at Smith Center, Smith Co., KS. He was the son of Merrill Forest Colby and Vergie Estella Munsinger. Cecil Duane Colby married Josephine M. Francis on 6 February 1936 at Smith Center, Smith Co., KS. Cecil Duane Colby was buried in 1997 at Iowa Falls, Hardin Co., IA. He died on 28 June 1997 at Edgerton, Rock Co., WI, at age 86.

Merrill Eldon Colby

Note: Eldon Colby always signed his name "M. Eldon Colby." He grew up on a farm near Smith Center, Kansas and went to Washington D.C. soon after graduating from the University of Nebraska to work as a staff member for U.S. Senator McGill of Kansas. When Federal Crop Insurance started in 1938 through an Act of Congress, its first employee was Eldon Colby. Eldon traveled "the field" in his early years with the FCIC and in his trips across the country often stopped in Iowa to visit his parents and brother, Cecil. In addition to working for the FCIC for 37 years, Eldon was mayor of Falls Church, VA in the 1950's, a member of the National Press Club, and an active member of the Episcopal Church. His son, Eldon, lives at the family home at 3415 Blair Rd. Falls Church, Virginia. Merrill Eldon Colby was born on 7 November 1908 at Smith Center, Smith Co., KS. He was the son of Merrill Forest Colby and Vergie Estella Munsinger. Merrill Eldon Colby was graduated in 1931 at University of Nebrasksa, NE. He was buried in 1973 at Falls Church, VA. He died in December 1973 at Falls Church, VA, at age 65.
