Johann George Clippinger was christened on 31 October 1793 at Stone Church, Kreidersville, Northampton Co., PA. He married Anna Mary Hamsher, daughter of Bernhard Hamsher and Maria Catherina Kleppinger. Occupation: Coppersmith. Johann George Clippinger lived in 1850 at Greencastle, Franklin Co., PA.1
Note: According to records, John Kleppinger moved with his family to Cumberland County, PA, where he settled. In this connection it will be interesting to quote a letter written in 1864 which refers to John Kleppinger's family and the Clippingers in general.
This is a letter written by George Clippinger, of Greencastle, Franklin co. PA, (a son of Anthony) to Rev. Henry Clippinger, (son of Henry Kleppinger). It reads as follows:
June 2, 1864
"Now I will say something about friends and relatives. The number that came from Germany was one, and his name was Anthony (Note: This should be John George), and lived in Northampton County, Pa., and he had six sons and their names were Henry, George, John, Frederick, Lewis and Anthony. If they had sisters I do not know.
"Now your father was a son of John. He lived 3 miles southwest of Shippensburg in Cumberland County. Frederick, Anthony and John they moved and settled about Shippensburg, Cumberland County, and George, he moved to Westmoreland County, Pa. Lewis and Henry stayed in Northampton County. Your father had 6 brothers and 5 sisters as far as I know. They are all gone home. Mother Smith in Chambersburg was a sister. She departed this spring a year. His son Jacob was our preacher these two years. Your father had a brother, his name was John, and he had a son called Frederick, and he moved to Ohio. He is the only one living of your father and grandfather's connection that I know of except you.
"Sol Clippinger that wrote to you from Lima, Ohio is a brother of mine, and the Clippinger at Funkstown is a brother, his name was John. And some of brother Adam's children are living at Lima also. The Dr. Clippinger you speak of who used to be called Sheriff John, is I think a son of John, he lived at Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pa., and he was a son of Uncle Frederick, who lived east of Shippensburg. And this Sheriff John, he moved to the State of Indiana some years ago. He had a son, a doctor, and that Mrs. Alleson might be a daughter of his. I never heard of a Clippinger but was related.
"Your father's sisters were all married, one the second time. Two were married to two men the name of Lee, and one to Hamsher, and one to Smith, one to Stall. Henry C., a brother of mine, lived at Newburk. Uncle Frederick had 3 sons, names, Anthony, George and John, the Sheriff. Your father's brothers' names were John, George, Conrad, Anthony, Peter, Frederick, Henry."
He died on 22 June 1869 at Greencastle Twp., Franklin Co., PA, at age 75.

Note: Biographical Annals of Cumberland Co. PA, 1905, p. 772-773:
JOHN CLIPPINGER, one of the most highly respected and substantial citizens of Hopewell township, Cumberland county, was born in 1826, in Lurgan township, Franklin Co., Pa., son of Henry and grandson of Anthony Clippinger. Anthony Clippinger was born in Germany, and after coming to America, located in Cumberland county, where he spent his life in agricultural pursuits, and died on his farm near Shippensburg. His children were: Henry, father of our subject; Adam, who died in the West; John, who died in Ohio; Joseph, who died in Ohio; George, who died in Franklin county; Solomon, who died in the West; Elizabeth, who married David Krebs, and died at Centerville, Cumberland county; and Catharine.
Henry Clippinger was born near Shippensburg, and received a common school education in the German language. He married Elizabeth Kuntz, of Northampton county, near Oak Grove. After marriage he settled in Southampton township, and farmed for a time, and then moved to Lurgan township, Franklin county, and bought a farm of 150 acres, where he built a fine barn and made substantial improvements on the house. Here he lived for twenty-eight years, and then moved to a location on the State road, in the same township, where he bought a farm of more than 300 acres. There he built a fine brick residence, and spent the balance of his life, dying at the age of eighty years and four months. His wife died at the age of seventy-six years, and both were buried in Franklin county, at the Otterbein Church. Mr. Clippinger had donated the land for the site of the church, and also for the cemetery. Both he and his wife were pious, worthy people, who lived up to their professions as sincere members of the Church of God, belonging to the congregation at Newburg. They were the parents of these children: Margaret married Jacob Rebok, and died in the year following her marriage, aged twenty-one years, and was buried in Lurgan township; Elias married Elizabeth Holler, was a farmer, and died at Center, Franklin county; Daniel married Mrs. Daniel Strohm, and was accidentally killed by falling from a load of hay, and was interred in Lurgan township; Solomon married Eva Gilbert, was a farmer and died at Newburg, Hopewell township, where he was interred; Elizabeth married John Zook, and died in Franklin county; Henry married Catherine Holler, and died on the home farm on the State road; Anthony married Susan Covel, went to Illinois, and died on his farm there; Peter married Elizabeth Cope, was a farmer, and died in Florida; John is the subject of this record; and Jacob, a carpenter, married Mary Swiler, and died in Illinois.
John Clippinger was reared on his father's farm, and was given school opportunities until he was twenty-one years old, attending through the winter sessions only, as is the custom in agricultural localities. He then worked among the other farmers for seven years in Franklin county, and two years in Hopewell township, Cumberland county, making many friends and accumulating some capital. In 1854 Mr. Clippinger married Elizabeth Rebok, daughter of Abraham and Susan (Garver) Rebok, of Franklin county. Buying a fine farm of 180 acres of fertile land, situated along the creek, he erected commodious buildings and made many improvements. There he lived until 1899, when he retired to Newburg, where he is one of the valued and esteemed citizens. Mrs. Clippinger died at the age of thirty-four years, and was buried in the cemetery at Newburg. She was a member of the Church of God, a good, Christian woman. The children of this marriage were: Susanna died aged one year and eight months, and was buried at Newburg; Abraham, a carpenter, lives at Bellville, Kans; Willis, a local preacher in the Baptist Church at Harrisburg, married Ida Ward; John died aged twenty-three years, and is buried at Newburg.
On March 22, 1864, Mr. Clippinger married (second) Mrs. Sarah Jane (Vandersaal) Thrush, and their children were: Anna V., born April 28, 1866, is at home; Frank U., born in October, 1869, married Mary Mowery, and lives on the old homestead farm in Hopewell township; Emma L., born Dec. 18, 1871, married C. Chamberlain, and they live in Hopewell township; and Flora Irene, born Aug. 5, 1874, married John R. Riggs, who is in the milling business in Franklin county.
In politics, Mr. Clippinger has always been identified with the Republican party, but has never actively engaged in political life. He has served three years as school director of Hopewell township, and has always given his influence in the direction of education, temperance and morality. Both he and his estimable wife are members of the Church of God at Newburg, in which for over fifty years he has been an officer - seventeen years as deacon, and the remainder as elder. During his younger years he taught in the Sabbath-school, and also was superintendent, and he still takes an interest in that part of the church's work. Although the snows of seventy-eight years have fallen on his venerable head, he is still active in mind and body, is interested in the movements of the outside world, and ready to help the needy and give the benefit of his long experience to those who value his advice and seek his counsel.

John H. Clippinger
M, b. 24 July 1819, d. 20 November 1891
John H. Clippinger was born on 24 July 1819 at Shippensburg, Cumberland Co., PA. He was the son of Anthony Clippinger and Christiann Hainz. John H. Clippinger married Julia Ann Carey. John H. Clippinger lived in 1850 at Shippensburg, Cumberland Co., PA, Merchant. There is conflicting information regarding the timing of John Clippinger's relocation to Delaware, Ohio. Cemetery records and Findagrave.com memorials indicate burials at Oak Grove Cemetery, Delaware, Ohio as early as 1845 for sons Carey and Davie Clippinger. However, the 1850 federal census clearly lists this family at Shippensburg, and the birthplace of Charles, William, and David as Pennsylvania. It is possible, if unlikely, that there was some cause of a brief relocation from Delaware back to Shippensburg before the 1850 census. I believe the better explanation lies in the inscriptions for children Carey and Davie on the large Clippinger monument: "Children of J. H. and J. A. Clippinger". These inscriptions appear of a more recent origin than the 1840s, and probably were included on the Clippinger monument contemporaneously with, or sometime after the death of the parents at Delaware. Joseph Clippinger
M, b. 1798, d. after 11 June 1880
Joseph Clippinger was born in 1798 at Shippensburg, Franklin Co., PA. He was the son of Johann Anthony Kleppinger and Anna Margaretha Heckman. Joseph Clippinger married Elizabeth (?) circa 1820.1 Occupation: a very proficient gunsmith, maker of Pennsylvania long rifles, well known for fine craftsmanship, between 1834 and 1880 at New Carlisle, Clark Co., OH.2 Joseph Clippinger died after 11 June 1880 at Illinois According to family tradition, Joseph and Elizabeth Clippinger fled west from their Maryland home after the Indian Removal Act was passed in 1830, because her Indian ancestry was widely known there. They followed the National Road west to the end of its then-current construction, which was at Springfield, Ohio. From there they settled on Main Street in New Carlisle and he had his home and gunsmith shop where the Security National Bank building stands today. When she was near 90 years of age (about 1890) Elizabeth wanted to travel west to visit relatives in Illinois and Kansas. Presumably the ones in Kansas, at least, were from her Native American Lenni-Lenapi tribe. When they were in Illinois, Joseph died and was buried -- the location is not known. Elizabeth then proceeded to Kansas and found her kin there. She never returned to Ohio. Her burial location is also not known.
