  • Samuel S. DeVault b. c 1905; This relationship is speculative. The 1920 census shows "Schrieber" Oakley, age 14, living with Leota and Clarence Oakley. He was the same age as Clarence's son Everett C. Oakley, but Everett was consiistently listed with his mother and was apparently in her custody. So one assumes that "Schrieber" was the same individual as "Samuel" in the 1910 census, grandson of Elbert Devault. In 1910, one can find Matthew Schreiber, age 26, living with his brother John in Woodville, a short distance east of Pike County, Illinois. DLB 2013

Note: Letter from Lucy Nell Thomas to Newland Devault, August 21, 1952

"The branch of the DeVault family which sprang from the marriage of Mary DeVault to Warrington Hunt has always been close to my mother's. Louise Hunt, who married Andrew C. Broyles, lived for years in Jonesboro, Tenn, where we also lived. In later years they sold their home in Jonesboro and lived with their children, spending some time with each one. When Cousin Louise died and the children carried her body back to Jonesboro for burial in the Old Cemetery there, we entertained them for dinner in our home, my mother being the head of the household at that time, my father having died in 1912. Cousin Mary Hendricks, daughter of Geo Henry DeVault and Emily Berry, who lived in Bristol, Tenn. were with us on that day also. I think all the children of Louise and Andrew Broyles were in Jonesboro at that time."

Poems by Marjorie DeVault

THANKS FOR THESE

Long it has been since I have seen a star,
Or stood at night and gazed at heavens afar;
Long it has been I have been forced to lie
And reach into my memories for pictures of the sky.

Long too, since I have braced the morning breeze
And looked on lanes and roads with rows of lovely trees.
The great outdoors I loved seems very far away
From these four walls where I a prisoner now lay;

A prisoner to pain and aching malady,
But these words I've penned wrong, I should more thankful be.
I have a great companion in a sister kind to me,
And I have many, many friends who keep me company.

All the great out of doors I would not change for these;
God knows I would not trade them for all the earth and seas.
But to you pain-free mortals who gaily walk the earth,
I beg you note the beauties of the out doors - know its worth'

Lest sometime in the future, perhaps you and not I
May need to search your memories for pictures of the sky.

WE THAT MOURN

Could it be that we may over mourn for our beloved dead?
"Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done" in the Lord's Prayer is said.
Is it self pity that makes us think we've so much time for tears,
Makes us forget the blessings God's given us through the years?

When with these many blessing we often failed to pray;
Should we expect that He would have Mercy on us today?
When, only in desperation we view the path we trod,
When, only in desperation we think to pray "Dear God".

Let us lay aside our grief, the dead will rest in peace,
Let's help the sick and dying their sufferings release.
Let's try to serve the Master as he would have us do,
And honor our dead by the beautiful way that we live and follow through.

OBITUARY

In the passing of Miss Elizabeth DeVault which occured at the home of her sister, Mrs. Chas. Harpole on Sunday May 24, Bayard looses one of its most esteamed citizens, who, during her life in this city, has proven to be a woman of lofty motives, kindly disposition, who by both, won the respect and love of all who knew her. Coming to Bayard when the social and religious life of the community was in the making, she took her place in both and carried her part well. In her church work she was particularly absorbed and her labors to direct her classes in Sunday school along the line of better living endeared her to those with whom she labored and from her efforts a lasting impression will doubtless remain of her religious training throughout the years to come.

Mary Elizabeth DeVault was born at New Florence, Mo., August 9, 1864. Departed this life Sunday afternoon, May 24, 1925, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Harpole. She moved with her parents to Bayard, Neb., in April 1901. Her father died October 1908, after which she and her mother made their home together until her mother's health failed to the home of their daughter and sister where she has resided until the time of her death. Her mother passed away April 27, 1923.

She united with the M. E. church in early childhood and has always loved to help in activities of her church. She was an active worker in the Sunday school and taught until her health failed and she had to give up her class, but her little "Sunshine Girls" as she always called them, never ceased visiting her and sending her flowers.

While she was almost a constant sufferer, she was always so patient and thoughtful of everyone and so appreciated ever act of kindness.

She said "I am ready and want to go, but am willing to wait until God calls me."

She leaves one brother, W. P. DeVault and one sister, Mrs C. H. Harpole.

Brief, but impressive funeral sermon was preached by Rev. R. W. Pruitt and a quartett composed of Mesdames Schwartzentruber and Wisner and Leach and Moore sang three of the deceased favorite songs. Her former class, the, "Little Sunshine Girls," were present in a body and placed their token of love on the casket in the form of beautiful flowers after which the body was laid to rest in the Bayard cemetery -- Bayard Transcript.
