Obituary (Findagrave.com):

Julius married Loretta Jane Hunter on 08 Feb 1877 in Scott county, Iowa. They were the parents of Faye B, Hayes H, and Marie Emma.

Feb 7, 1907 - Carroll Times - The report of the shooting by his own hand of J.A. Culbertson of Glidden reached here yesterday morning and Coroner Kelly and Sheriff Hamilton drove down for the purpose of holding an inquest. The facts were so plain and unquestionable that it was not considered necessary to have an inquest.

It seems that since the sale of the elevator to the Farmers Cooperative Ass'n. last summer he had grown despondent. Thinking that active business might restore him, he had just purchased the P.H. Tennant grocery store and the invoice had been completed the night before. It was while preparing to go to the store about 8:30 that morning that he got rid of members of his family, his wife and her mother, by having them respond to separate reguests. They had scarcely gone from the room before a shot rang out and returning in haste they found him lying on the floor with a bullet wound over the eye. He never regained consciousness and died within half an hour.

He was in common with his brothers, J.C. Culbertson of Glidden, Hon. W.L. Culbertson of this place, and Steven of St. Louis, a most genial agreeable man. He is reported well to do and with no troubles of any kind. The tragic death of another brother, R.Y. Culbertson, who took his own life a few years ago in this city, may have had a strong bearing on his undoubted mental aberation that caused him to take his own life.

He is survived by his wife and three children, a son and one daughter attending Coe college, Cedar Rapids and a daughter who is a teacher of the Albion, Iowa schools.

He was buried in February 1907 at West Lawn Cemetery, Glidden, Carroll Co., IA, Findagrave #69107834.
