Oakley, proprietor of the Oakley Theater, died at 1:35 a.m. Monday at her home on Lake Avenue after a serious illness of more than eight weeks duration. Death, which relieved her of a long and patient suffering was said to have been caused by a complication of diseases following an operation performed some time ago.

OBITUARY

DEATH TAKES LEOTA E. OAKLEY
Leota E. Oakley, wife of C. E. Oakley, died at her home in Lake Avenue, Monday 1:30 A.M. Death came as a blessing to the patient suffering after a lingering illness of the past 9 weeks. Mrs. Oakley was well liked in this vicinity and her many friends sympathize with those that are here to mourn her loss as she was known by all her friends to possess such a pleasing personality. Mr. Oakley and family came to Lake Worth two years ago. The body remained in state at the Funeral Home of Cadieu and Kay, until Tuesday A.M., when it was accompanied north by the husband to Pittsfield, Ill. to be laid to rest beside that of her son William who died five years ago. Mrs. Oakley was born in Pittsfield, Ill., February 1st, 1886. Surviving her are Clarence E. Oakley, husband; one son, Schriber, age 20; two daughters; Juanita, 10 and Margaret 7, father, one brother and one sister, all of Pittsfield.

CARD OF THANKS.

  • Schreiber Lucian Oakley+ b. 22 Feb 1905, d. 27 May 1954; There is some uncertainty about this relationship and name. The 1920 census shows "Schrieber" Oakley, age 14, living with Leota and Clarence Oakley. He was the same age as Clarence's son Everett C. Oakley, but Everett was consiistently listed with his mother and was apparently in her custody. So one assumes that "Schrieber" in 1920 was the same individual as "Samuel" in the 1910 census, grandson of Elbert DeVault. It would appear that this individual was an out-of-wedlock son of Leota E. DeVault, and for some reason his name was changed from Samuel to Schreiber. In 1910, one can find Matthew Schreiber, age 26 and single, living with his brother John in Woodville, a short distance east of Pike County, Illinois. DLB 2013

Louis was married to Bertha Lou Ella Plowman (1906-1991) born and died in North Carolina and they had a son Bobby Louis DeVault (7-7-1928-8-12-1993). He was married to Mary Louise Covington (1926-1985) and so far one daughter Valerie "Rene" DeVault (7- 4-1960-8-11-1979). She was murdered in Florida by Joseph Alan Marter who hung himself in his cell in 1992. I have been trying to find obituaries for Bobby Louis, Mary Louise and Valerie and Bertha but with no luck.
Also the reason he was donated to science is because his sister Elizabeth and some of the other siblings said they couldn't bury him due to financial reasons. In actuality there was a grave for him next to his parents in Acton. In 1920 William and Stella purchased 6 plots when William David died. Two are unused and since I'm a descendant they are now in my name. Also since he was in the military he could of had those benefits but they refused. Louis' wife Bertha remarried in 1952 to a Turner Lee Gregory. Elizabeth didn't even send him to Madison with his own clothing. He was there from 1942-1943 and 1943-1968 and 1968-1969. In early 1968 he was released to the care of Minnie Bear who ran the Bear family care home in Dupont Indiana. It was a farm which is a setting that he wanted to be in. He worked on the farm earning some money and was very happy and had no issues while living there. Only reason he was sent back to Madison was due to his cancer and his health failing fast. Minnie actually visited him after she had to send him back to the hospital.

Note: Letter from Lucy Nell Thomas to Newland Devault, August 21, 1952

"The branch of the DeVault family which sprang from the marriage of Mary DeVault to Warrington Hunt has always been close to my mother's. Louise Hunt, who married Andrew C. Broyles, lived for years in Jonesboro, Tenn, where we also lived. In later years they sold their home in Jonesboro and lived with their children, spending some time with each one. When Cousin Louise died and the children carried her body back to Jonesboro for burial in the Old Cemetery there, we entertained them for dinner in our home, my mother being the head of the household at that time, my father having died in 1912. Cousin Mary Hendricks, daughter of Geo Henry DeVault and Emily Berry, who lived in Bristol, Tenn. were with us on that day also. I think all the children of Louise and Andrew Broyles were in Jonesboro at that time."

Poems by Marjorie DeVault

THANKS FOR THESE

Long it has been since I have seen a star,
Or stood at night and gazed at heavens afar;
Long it has been I have been forced to lie
And reach into my memories for pictures of the sky.

Long too, since I have braced the morning breeze
And looked on lanes and roads with rows of lovely trees.
The great outdoors I loved seems very far away
From these four walls where I a prisoner now lay;

A prisoner to pain and aching malady,
But these words I've penned wrong, I should more thankful be.
I have a great companion in a sister kind to me,
And I have many, many friends who keep me company.

All the great out of doors I would not change for these;
God knows I would not trade them for all the earth and seas.
But to you pain-free mortals who gaily walk the earth,
I beg you note the beauties of the out doors - know its worth'

Lest sometime in the future, perhaps you and not I
May need to search your memories for pictures of the sky.

WE THAT MOURN

Could it be that we may over mourn for our beloved dead?
"Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done" in the Lord's Prayer is said.
Is it self pity that makes us think we've so much time for tears,
Makes us forget the blessings God's given us through the years?

When with these many blessing we often failed to pray;
Should we expect that He would have Mercy on us today?
When, only in desperation we view the path we trod,
When, only in desperation we think to pray "Dear God".

Let us lay aside our grief, the dead will rest in peace,
Let's help the sick and dying their sufferings release.
Let's try to serve the Master as he would have us do,
And honor our dead by the beautiful way that we live and follow through.
