He had a tannery there until the close of the Civil War when the Federals destroyed it. Everything he had was destroyed, except the land ---- he raised a large family of twelve and did not have much time to talk of the past." [His brother, George Henry DeVault also operated a tannery at Elizabethton, Tennessee, which was also destroyed by the Federals.]
"My grandfather [Jacob DeVault, Sr.] came to the DeVault Settlement when my father was a young man, 16 years old." [Joseph remembers his father telling him this and as his father was born in 1819, this would make the year 1835, when Jacob, Sr. left Washington Co., Tennessee and moved to Sullivan Co., Tennessee, just east of DeVault's Ford. This was about the time of Jacob, Sr.'s second marriage.] "The home in which my Grandfather lived near the DeVault Settlement, on the Watauga, was burned. He was badly burned and spent the remainder of his life with his datghter, Mary, who married Warrington Hunt and was buried in the old Cemetery at Jonesboro. I do not know where or when his first wife died or was buried."

Note: Jacob, Sr.'s first wife, Rachel Dorothy (Kitzmiller) Dewald died on August 8, 1826 and was buried in the church yard of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hanover, Pennsylvania.

Just a little to acquaint you with our children. We raised six and helped to raise three of my younger brother's. We gave all six of our children a college education and helped two of my brother's to get one (one died) -- not a black sheep in the family. All are doing excellent in their work, but so, so far from home that most of them do not get here more than once a year -- all members of the Church and I hope Christians. I pray daily that they may live better lives than I have been able to do. And may God continue his mercy on us. May God bless you and yours."

Lary (sic) DeVault, 2 1/2 of 3227 Fairmount Ave. probably has lost his taste for ant syrup because he doesn't like luke warm salt water.

Police yesterday forcefully induced him to drink large quantities of the "icky"-tasting stuff after he had swallowed a "jigger" of syrup. Their explanation that it was an "antidote" didn't help a bit.

Child of Leota Eleanor DeVault

  • Schreiber Lucian Oakley+ b. 22 Feb 1905, d. 27 May 1954; There is some uncertainty about this relationship and name. The 1920 census shows "Schrieber" Oakley, age 14, living with Leota and Clarence Oakley. He was the same age as Clarence's son Everett C. Oakley, but Everett was consiistently listed with his mother and was apparently in her custody. So one assumes that "Schrieber" in 1920 was the same individual as "Samuel" in the 1910 census, grandson of Elbert DeVault. It would appear that this individual was an out-of-wedlock son of Leota E. DeVault, and for some reason his name was changed from Samuel to Schreiber. In 1910, one can find Matthew Schreiber, age 26 and single, living with his brother John in Woodville, a short distance east of Pike County, Illinois. DLB 2013
