John P. Dresback1
M, b. 20 August 1835, d. 10 October 1913
John P. Dresback was born on 20 August 1835 at Ross Co., OH.1 He married Anna Rebecca Miles on 25 March 1868 at Piatt Co., IL. John P. Dresback died on 10 October 1913 at De Land, Piatt Co., IL, at age 78 Obituary (findagrave.com):
This community was shocked and saddened when it became known that John P. Dresback, one of DeLand's oldest and most highly respected citizens had died Friday, October 10, 1913 from appendicitis from which had suffered less than a week, following his visit to Tuscola where he had attended an old soldiers' reunion. He was thought to be on the road to recovery up to an early hour of the morning of the day of his death. The funeral services were held Sunday in the M.E. Church. Thomas Miles, a brother of Mrs. Dresback, made a touching prayer and later in the services gave a laudatory talk on the life of the deceased. The attendance was among the largest in DeLand in a long time. Some twenty or more old soldier comrades from here and Monticello were seated in a body of seats reserved for them and they afterward participated in a military burial at the DeLand cemetery. The floral offerings on and around the casket were many and beautiful.
Mr. Dresback was born in Ross County, Ohio on August 20, 1835 and died at his home at the corner of Western Avenue and Third Street in DeLand. He was married on March 25, 1868 to Miss Anna Miles of Cisco and to this union eight children were born, seven of whom survive along with his wife. They are: Mrs. Lena Briggs, Decatur; Charles E. and J.W., Robert, and Mrs. Eva Cathcart all of DeLand; Mrs. Jessie Ennis of Wagner; Mrs. Irma Rankin of Sidney; also two sisters and twenty grandchildren.
When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Dresback took an earnest and patriotic interest in national affairs, and in August 1862 enlisted in Co. E., 107th Illinois infantry regiment and served thru the war. He participated in the important battles of Knoxville, Hull's Ferry, Campbell Station, Franklin and in many skirmishes. He was one of the fortunate number who escaped wounds and capture, but was obliged to spend some time in the Army hospital at Albany, Indiana on account of illness. He was mustered out of service at Salisbury, North Carolina in June 1865 and returned to Monticello where he engaged in work at his trade of being a carpenter. He followed this until 1870 when he purchased 80 acres of land east of Monticello which he farmed up to 1892 when he sold it and bought 160 acres a mile south of DeLand where he and family resided until 1903 when he retired from active farming and came into town and erected a handsome home where he and his wife had since resided. He was converted a great many years ago and always was a thoroughly earnest Christian and a leading member and earnest worker in the Methodist Church during his residence in this township.

He was buried in October 1913 at Goose Creek Township Cemetery, De Land, Piatt Co., IL, Find A Grave Memorial# 28091262.
