Beaver Township

Beaver Township, Guernsey County, was where Philip Wendel and his wife Barbara Swartz chose to settle in 1801, after an arduous trek across the Allegheny Mountains from Toms Brook, Virginia with their first six children. They received title to their land on December 22, 1801. In the village of Willamsburg, now Batesville, they bought a plot near Beaver Run and engaged in the agriculture of the day, probably including distilling of corn liquor. In the 1851 creation of Noble County, Ohio, Beaver, Wayne, Buffalo, and Seneca Townships of Guernsey were carved off to form the northern tier of the new Noble County, Ohio.

Beaver Township history, showing that Daniel and Philip Wendell were involved in the original township organization.
Daniel Wendell was a younger brother of my ancestor Philip Wendell. These two brothers consistently spelled their surname "Wendell", unlike most other Wendel descendants, who mostly use "Windle" or "Windell". Daniel's house at Batesville was the first brick home built there. The log "shed" was the original cabin where the family lived while the brick house was built.
