William Dennison was born on 23 November 1815 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH. He married Anne Eliza Neil, daughter of William Neil and Hannah Schwing, in 1840. William Dennison died on 15 June 1882 in Columbus, Franklin Co., OH.

William Dennison received a degree in Miami University, Oxford, Butler Co., OH. Occupation: Lawyer, 24th governor of Ohio, Postmaster General in the administration of President Lincoln.2

Note:

Dennison served one term in the Ohio Senate, 1848-1849. During his term, he fought hard to repeal Ohio's "Black Laws". These laws placed restrictions on residency and denied certain rights and privileges. Dennsion was successful in 1849. He achieved the political goal pursued by other governors, such as Salmon P. Chase and Mordecai Bartley.

Dennsion was Ohio's governor when the Civil War began. Utilizing emergency powers, he mobilized the state for war.
