Jessie Alberta Northrup

Dec. 21, 1914 -- Oct. 22, 1999

Jessie Alberta Northrup died Friday at an Albany nursing home at the age of 84.

She was born to Rollo and Cora Munsinger in Nebraska. She grew up and received her education in Nebraska and worked as a dishwasher and in food preparation for a number of years. Later, she was employed for about 11 years as a food line inspector at Or-Ida Frozen Foods in Ontario, Ore.

She and Clarence Salter were married in Nebraska in 1935. After a divorce, she married Earl D. Northrup in 1941, also in Nebraska. After her husband's death in 1987, Mrs. Northrup moved to Jefferson, later to Salem and then to Albany to live with her son Terry.

She moved to a nursing home three years ago.

Mrs. Northrup is survived by sons Clarence Northrup (sic) of Washington state, Franklin and Terry Northrup of Albany and Danny Northrup of Payette, Idaho. Her son Donovan Northrup died before her.

She also is surviived by her brother Kenneth Munsinger of St. Edward, Neb., sister Velma van Oyen of Whitebird, Idaho, 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mrs. Northrup will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at AAsum Funeral Chapel, Albany.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Alliance of Oregon.

Velma M. VanOyen, 97, Cottonwood

Velma M. VanOyen of Cottonwood went to meet her Savior on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008. She died peacefully in her sleep at the Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Velma was born June 13, 1911, At Bartlett, Neb., the daughter of Rollo and Cora Munsinger.

She married Alpha VanOyen Oct. 27, 1928, in Fullerton, Neb., and was married 62 years when Alpha passed away in 1990. They moved to Oregon and Idaho in the late 1930s and took up ranching. Velma worked for several years at the Shore Lodge in McCall before retiring. They moved to Cottonwood in 1989.

Velma is survived by three daughters and one son, Darlene Halbert and husband Merlin, and Shirley Smith, all of Cottonwood, Marion Whipple of Yakima, and Delwin VanOyen and wife Gloria of Kooskia; one brother, Kenneth Munsinger and wife Sally of Nebraska; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two daughters, Delores VanOyen and Twila Glenn; one grandson, Timothy Halbert; two brothers; and three sisters.

Velma was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a very gentle, kind and loving person, who will be greatly missed by all that cared for her.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Uhlorn Funeral Home in Cottonwood. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cottonwood Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospital Ambulance Fund.

Arrangements are with Uhlorn Funeral Home.
