Col. Samuel H. Price in early life learned the trade of house carpenter; later in life read law with John L. Thompson, Esq., and was admitted to practice at the Lancaster bar in 1852. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1857 and 1858 on the Republican ticket and when the war of the Rebellion broke out he served for a time in the army. The title of Colonel however came by appointment from Governor Porter in the Militia service, a service in which the deceased took an active interest. He was a prominent figure in the Volunteer Fire Department of the city having been president of the American Fire Co., and for many years a controlling spirit in that organization. He represented the old south-east ward in Common Council and afterward represented the 3d Ward in the same branch of the city government. His whole career was marked by activity and energy and few persons in the community were better known. He was fond of newspaper work and in earlier years contributed not a little to the press of this city and county. He was professor of a very fine library and was especially fond of historical reading.¹

He was buried in May 1884 in Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA, Findagrave #37703263.

Biography

John Levering, D.D.S., was born on 19 August 1820.¹ He married Mary Shugard, daughter of Henry Shugard and Catharine Nice, on 28 May 1851.¹ John Levering, D.D.S., died on 13 October 1923 in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia Co. (probably), PA, Dr. Levering, D.D.S., practised his profession until about 1870; was an Odd Fellow for over 76 years and lived to the remarkable age of 103. His father, John Levering, was a son of Michael and Catherine (Moyer neé Tibben) Levering; grandson of Benjamin and Catharine (Righter) Levering; great-grandson of Jacob and Alice (Tunes) Levering, great-great-grandson of Wigard and Magdalena (Boker) Levering, great-great-great-grandson of Rosier and Elizabeth (Van de Walle) Levering, d. Gemen, Westphalia, Germany, near the Holland frontier.¹
