Rev. J.M. Bowman was born Oct. 17, 1863, near Roann, Ind., and died Jan. 19, 1902, at San Diego, California; aged 38 years, 3 months and 12 days. He was married to Miss Etta Warvel, May 15, 1900.
He leaves his wife, aged father, four brothers and many friends to mourn his departure.
His mother, a brother and an only sister had preceeded him to the spirit world.
While attending school at Mt. Morris, Ill., during the year of 1883 he united with the German Baptist church. Returning home he taught school five or six years. Later he identified himself with the Roann Brethren church and the year following was elected as deacon and in due course of time advanced to the Eldership.
He served as pastor of the Roann Brethren church for two years, during this time the present church was erected, his being one of the men instrumental in accomplishing the erection of the church. He was elected State Evangelist at the conference held in 1892, was pastor of the Glenford Brethren church in Ohio a number of years also served Buckeye City and Miamisburg, Ohio, as pastor, his work in Ohio covering a period of seven years. While in Glenford a new church was erected. He assisted in helding[sic] a camp meeting for the Brethren in California one summer.
He was a man of strong convictions and generous nature. He had at heart the cause of Christ. Thus a man of sterling qualities has left us and his loss will be felt not only by you his companion, father and brothers but us all as individuals and as a church. Funeral services at North Manchester Brethren church burial at Oak Lawn.

Hannah and her husband Isaac Bowman came to Indiana from VA in 1852. Both were natives of Franklin Co., VA where they were married on December 3, 1849.

Hannah was the daughter of George Naff [E161] and Hannah Bowmen. George is the son of Jacob NAFF (1767-1833)F-a-G #41728106 and Elizabeth Stover Neff (1774-1855) F-a-G 41728493. In Franklin Co., VA, the spelling of the family name will be found as NAFF. Family members migrated to OH and IN, some changed the spelling from NAFF to NEFF. Hannah and her husband Isaac are both a Naff intermarriages. Family belonged to the Church of the Brethren in VA and IN.

Bowman - In the Roann church, Ind., March 19, 1900 Sister Hannah, wife of Bro. Isaac Bowman, age 69 years, 4 months, and 6 days. Deceased was born in Franklin County, Va., in 1830. Married Isaac Bowman in 1849. Of eight children, three preceded her. In 1852, they settled on a farm near Roann. In 1853, she united with the church and lived a Christian life. A husband and five sons survive. Interment in new cemetery north of town. Services by Eld. Albert Wright from Psalm 17:15 "THE GOSPEL MESSENGER" April 7, 1900 by Joseph John.
