US Presidential Cabinet Member. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University 1892, earned a law degree at Lee University 1894 and proceeded to practice law in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Moving to Cleveland, Ohio, he became active in local politics, served as City Solicitor (1901-09) and was elected the 37th Mayor of Cleveland, serving (1912-16). With the advent of World War I, President Woodrow Wilson appointed him the Secretary of War in 1916. In position as Baker was responsible for drafting, organizing and outfitting an army of two million men as quickly as possible, plus demobilizing the troops and negotiating the cancellation of war contracts when the war ended. Baker left office and Washington D.C. in the spring of 1921, returning to his law firm in Cleveland. For his service, he was awarded the U.S. Distinguished Service Medal in 1928. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 66 in Shaker Heights, Ohio.



He was buried in Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, Findagrave #48.

He was the son of Elias Baker, Was married to Mary Ann Dukehart Baker of Jefferson County. After an unsuccessful venture in southern Virginia with an iron mill, he returned to Martinsburg and then Shepherdstown where he had a general store in each place. At the age of 19 he entered the Confederate army and remained in Stuarts Calvalry until the end of the War. On his return from the war in 1865, Newton Baker went to Baltimore to study medicine at the University of Maryland. He had attended one year at Wittenburg College at Springfield, Ohio, but hadn't completed his course work. In 1867, he graduated from the University of Maryland as a physician and moved back to Martinsburg, where he bought a home and practice of Dr. Quigley. From that time until his death he practiced medicine on E. Burke Street.

(His son was Newton Diehl Baker was private secretary to Postmaster General Wilson, Lawyer in Martinsburg and Cleveland, Ohio, City Solicitor of Cleveland and Mayor from 1912 to 1916, Appointed Secretary of War by President Wilson serving from 1916-03-07 to 1921-03-04. Appointed by President Coolidge in 1928 as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, The Hague.) Today the Newton D Baker Veterans Affairs Medical Center and that entire area of Baker Heights bares (sic) his son's name.



He was buried in February 1908 in Green Hill Cemetery, Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., WV, Findagrave #25968246.

Businessman

As a child, Mr. Baker was called Jack. His father wanted to name him John but his mother named him after his father. He was eight years old when his father joined Woodrow Wilson's Cabinet. He chose not to attend college and went to work at the Glenn L. Martin Co. where he inspected propellers. He also barnstormed with Curtiss-Wright Flying Services. He then spent a year touring the world and then another recuperating from a collapsed lung. In 1942, he became an assistant to the president of the Cleveland Graphic Bronze Company. He commuted between Cleveland and Washington handling the company's government business. Mr. Baker was executive vice president and then president of Harris Products from 1949 until 1956 when it became Maloney Electric Co. He retired in 1959. In 1966, he became an employee of the Lakeview Cemetery and patrolled the grounds trying to keep the park likeness of the cemetery. He belonged to many organizations including the Holden Arboretum.



He was buried in January 1982 in Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, Findagrave #67554807.
