Biography

Jacob Petrie was born about 1786 in Pirmasens (probably), Palatinate, His passport issued in February, 1831 by the Royal Commissioner General, Kingdom of Bavaria, gave his age as 44 and that he was a native of Pirmasens. He married Sophia Eleanora Faulhaber, daughter of Johann Wilhelm Faulhaber and Sophia Christina Friedrike Licht, on 22 September 1817. Jacob Petrie married Elizabetha Faulhaber, daughter of Johann Wilhelm Faulhaber and Sophia Christina Friedrike Licht, on 7 August 1820 in Thaleischweiler, Palatinate. Jacob Petrie died in 1831 in sea; en route to the U.S.A.

on the ship Sud Carolina.¹

Jacob Petrie began military service in the army of Napoleon I, serving for eight years. He participated in the 1812 march to Russia, witnessed the burning of Moscow, and survived the retreat. He was instrumental in saving the life of Joseph Bonaparte, King of Spain and elder brother of Napoleon. He was a life-long admirer of Napoleon but the defeat of the Empire resulted in loss of his military pension entitlement.¹
