Bobby Gene Hicks was born on 27 December 1938 in Washington Co., TN; son of Harrison Eli and Mary Sophronia "Fronie" (Baines) Hicks; foster son of Beryl Robert and Bonnie Mae (Cox) Sells of Jonesborough. JONESBORO -- In a candlelight service in Greenvale Baptist Church,? ? Miss Sally Patricia DeVault became the bride of Bobby Gene Hicks, Saturday, July 15.

The double-ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Ronald Sproles before an alter banked with greenery and baskets of gladioli. Illuminating the scene were seven candelabra, entwined with ivy.? ? Burning tapirs tied with white satin and surrounded with ivy were placed in the windows.? ? Family pews were marked with white satin bows.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde DeVault Sr. of Jonesboro, Route 2.? ? The bridegroom is the foster son of Mr. and Mrs. Buryl Sells of Jonesboro, Route 2.

Organ nuptial music was presented by J. C. Milhorn. Mrs. Galen Fitzgerald sang "Whither Thou Goest" and Miss Judy Sporles sang "The Lord's Prayer."

The bride was given in marriage by her father.? ? She ware a gown of imported silk mist featuring a basque bodice with a sabrina neckline and cap sleeves.? ? The bodice was overlaid with Alencon lace embroidered with iridescent sequins and seed pearls.? ? Tiny covered buttons accented the scalloped bodice.? ? The full-length skirt was appliqued with designs of reembroideried Alencon lace and terminated in a chapel train.

A lace covered crown embroidered with iridescent sequins and seed pearls held her veil of elbow-length French illusion.? ? Her bouquet was a cascade of white roses.

Miss Vanessa Reed of Limestone was maid of honor.? ? She ware a dress of pale yellow silk organdy featuring a fitted bodice and waltz length skirt of tiers of embroidered organdy.? ? Matching headband and an arm bouquet of shasta daisies tied with satin streamers completed her ensemble.

Bridesmaids were Miss Janice Broyles and Miss Wilma Rogers.? ? Miss Louanna Patton Sells, niece of the bride, was junior bridesmaid.? ? The attendants wore dresses identical to that of the maid of honor and carried similar floral arrangements.

Miss Diana Joe Cox, cousin of the bride, was flower girl. She wore a white embroidered organdy dress with a fitted bodice and tiered skirt.? ? Her headband was of Tine shasta daisies.

Danny DeVault Sells, nephew of the bride, was ring bearer.? ? He carried a white satin pillow edged in nylon lace.

Max Kennedy of Statesville, N. C. was best man.? ? Ushers were Bo Wheelock and Larry Fish.

The mother of the bride wore a blue lace and taffeta dress with white accessories and a corsage of white carnations.

The bridegroom's mother wore a blue silk dress with white accessories and a white carnation corsage.

The reception was held in the fellowship hall of the church.? ? Those assisting in serving were Mrs. Lela Crouch, Mrs. Hazel Dunn of Trenton Ga., Mrs. Dorothy Cox, Mrs. Dorothy Sproles, Mrs. Loetta Chase and Mrs. Sue McIntosh.? ? Mrs. Letha Fish kept the bridal register.

The couple are at home at Route 5, Jonesboro.

Mr. Bobby Gene Hicks, 68, Gray, died on Sunday, January 7, 2007, surrounded by his family at his residence following an extended illness.

A native of Washington County, Mr. Hicks had lived his entire life in the Gray area. He was the son of the late Harry & Fronie Hicks. His foster parents were the late Beryl & Bonnie Sells.

Mr. Hicks was a graduate of Sulphur Springs High School and served in the Army Reserve for three years. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Hicks was a farmer at age 11 and worked for Tennessee Eastman until 1970 when he formed Hicks Construction Company. He was an active member of the Johnson City Area Home Builders Association and served as President in 1983 and 1984. Mr. Hicks was Builder of the Year in 1988 and 1994. He served as President of the Home Builders Association of Tennessee in 1990 and was Builder of the Year in 1988 and 1994. In 2002, he was inducted into the Building Industry of Tennessee Hall of Fame. He currently owned Gray Mini Warehouses and Office Complex in Gary.

Mr. Hicks served 12 years as a Washington County Commissioner. He served on the Washington County/Johnson City Chamber of Commerce and the Washington County/Johnson City Economic Development Board. Because of his active involvement in community service, the Gray Library and the EMS buildings were named in his honor.

Mr. Hicks was elected State Representative for the 6th District of Washington County in1994 through 1998 and continually lobbied for better roads, growth and development in Upper East Tennessee. His driving force while in the legislature was the widening of Highway 75, resulting in the highway being renamed the Bobby Hicks Highway by the State Legislative Body.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Long Hicks of the home; a son, Timothy Hicks and wife, Keri, of Gray; two daughters, Alisa Rogers and husband, Johnny, and Debi Camden and husband Dan, all of Gray; three grandsons, Kyle Hicks, of Knoxville, Jacob Rogers and Nick Ferguson, both of Gray; two brothers, Bryl Hicks of Riverside, CA, and J. D. Hicks of Limestone; four sisters, Carolyn Babb of Fall Branch, Susie Phelps and Zelda Nunley, both of Kingsport, and Carolyn Smith of Johnson City. Mr. Hicks is also survived by Sally Hicks, a wonderful lady and mother of his children. Also surviving are Chastity Rodriguez and Anna Tubbs, who have been a part of his family for the past 18 years. He was preceded in death by an infant son, David Andrew Hicks; three brothers, Paul, John, and Herbert Hicks; and a sister, Frances Chase.

A Celebration of Life Service for Bobby Hicks will be held at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, January 9 at Tetrick Funeral Services with Rev. Mitch McClure and Rev. Charles Galliher officiating. Music will be provided by Bill and Leroy Long and Carter Warden. The family will receive friends from 1 – 3 PM and from 5 – 7 PM. A Committal Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday in Washington County Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 PM to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jacob Rogers, Nick Ferguson, Kyle Hicks, Dwayne Littleton, Scott Buckingham, Mark Sizemore, and Rick Beeson. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Storey, Mike Freeman, Galen Fitzgerald, Jack Mottern, John Ford, Chuck Mason, Elmer Tate, Joe Stitt, Wilburn White, and Bill McKay.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to the Bobby Hicks Challenger League Memorial Fund, 112 Industrial Road, Suite 1, Gray, TN 37615, which is a baseball league for mentally and physically challenged children.
