Letter from William Sanders to his nephew, Lewis Pigg (Tracy Devault transcription)

Golden City Mo. Aug 14 1888

Dear Nephew yours of the 6 come to hand in due time found all well was glad to hear from you. I have been working all Summer You know that is something new for me. I am done making hay but helping others. I put up 10 ton hay is good. Crops of all kinds is good with out it is oats. They were just moderate - I have not been down in Jasper only 3 or 4 times in the last 8 months but will go down in a day or two. The man that offered 1.25 for your mule was a mule buyer passing through. I have not saw him since last winter. Jes said the last time I saw him that the small one was just commencing to grow for while it was at west it got the scratches & I believe the distemper and got very poor, but Bill and Lamkins both want the oldest one & offers $100. I hear nothing more about them & if they can be sold. C west told me the amt of corn he got. I disremember I think it lacks a little of making full payment to Bell Becurn sold about 100 bus to fix house. The mules bother in Walt Jones place. I believe he has sold out & Chambers and Moody all out but old boby. Jes sold his place fare and square but the man went back. The land south of Jes is sold and being ploughed up. John Warfeld sold his. We will soon have the cars running to Golden. We can sit in the house and see the hands working on the road. You would hardly know this country it is improving so fast. About them sheep all I can say just now is that all wants sheep now. I think they can be had for $2 but would have to go to Polk Co or lawrence. So I will close till I write. If you want to know anything more write soon as I am going away after little.

W. Sanders.
