NEWSPAPER ARTICLE - The Schuyler Citizen, June 15, 1859

We had the pleasure of visiting our former townsman, Mr. Eliphalet Munson, now of McDonough County - his farm, about 4 miles north of Doddsville has been drained by BLIND DITCHES.

OBITUARY

Eliphet P. Munson

. . . and most prominent person of this township died at 5:30 o'clock Thursday morning, May 9, of old age and complications at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. L. Kirkpatrick, living northwest of town. Funeral services were held at the Kirkpatrick residence Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock; interment in Camp Creek cemetery.

Eliphet P. Munson was born in the state of Vermont, June 11, 1817, his age being 89 years 10 months and 28 days. With his parents he removed to this state at the age of 15 years; locating in Schuyler county. There he lived until March, 1853, when he removed to this county, locating in this township, where he resided for many years. On Jan. 16, 1840 he married in Hancock county to Catherine Sanders, she having died a number of years ago.

For a number of years he followed farming but afterward engaged in the pottery business at Tennessee, taking possession of same in 1883 and conducting that business for some time. He was also engaged in the grocery business in Macomb at one time and also at Oregon, Ill. Of late years he was so feebled by advanced age and made his home with his different children. For some time he resided with his daughters in Houston, Texas, but his health becoming poor he returned to the home of his daughter in this township something over a ago where he remained until his death. Since May of last year he had been confined to his bed and his decline has been gradual. He bore the suffering of his last days with patience and fortitude, and with his death another old citizen passes to his reward.

He was the father of ten children of whom survive - Wm T., Tina, Mo.; Mrs. Mary Kirkpatrick, Industry township; Mrs. Lydia Ellis, Carroll county, Mo.; Mrs. Edith James, Beardstown; Mrs. Nora Clark and Mrs. Louise C. Franklin, both of Houston, Tex. Two children died in infancy and two - Daniel and Iola - since reaching their maturity.

Daniel P. Munson was born about 1843 in Illinois. He married Mary Jane Vawter, daughter of Beverly Sparks Vawter and Harriet Jane Lasley, on 16 November 1870 in McDonough Co., IL. Daniel P. Munson married Lillian L. about 1899. He died on 19 May 1905 in Wellington, Sumner Co., KS.

He was buried in May 1905 in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Wellington, Sumner Co., KS.

Note:

Daniel came to Sumner County, Kansas from Rushville, Illinois in 1873. He worked on a farm south of Milan until 1899, then moved to Wellington to "engage in the flour and feed business." At his death his father and several brothers and sisters were still living in Illinois. He died of typhoid pneumonia. He was survived by his father E.P. Munson of Macomb, Illinois, then 88.

Apparently his move to Wellington was about the same time that he married his second wife, Lillian. That may explain why Mary Jane Vawter does not have a stone next to his in Prairie Lawn Cemetery.

Daniel P. Munson lived in 1885 in Palestine Twp., Sumner Co., KS. Cause of death: typhoid pneumonia.

Biography

Daisy Mae Munson was born on 24 July 1882 in Sumner Co., KS. She married Charles Macey Meyer, son of Jacob Meyer and Henrietta Nacy, about 1900. Daisy Mae Munson was buried, possibly buried at Osborne Twp. Cemetery, Mayfield, Kansas.

Note:

Online ancestry.com, 1885 Kansas State Census. Microfilm reels K-1 – K-146. Kansas State Historical Society.

The 1900 Census record for Wellington, Sumner County, Kansas shows that Daisy married Charles Macey Meyer. They had just married in 1900 and by 1905, Charles was married to Effie Smiley. Whether Daisy died shortly after she married Charles or whether Daisy and Charles divorced is not known.

Several genealogies say that Daisy married Ames Judd and died in New York. (One genealogy says she married Albert M. Judd. I believe that the Daisy that married Albert M. Judd was not our Daisy.) I can find no record of our Daisy after she was married to Charles Macey Meyer. Daisy is supposed to be buried in Osborne Township Cemetery, Mayfield, Kansas. If we could find her stone maybe we could answer this question.
