William Frederick Mertel
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, 1995, in Valley Community Presbyterian Church, where he was a member.
Mr. Mertel died Oct. 21 at age 81. He was born June 28, 1914, in Strasburg, Colo. He worked with Shell Oil for 40 years and lived in the Portland area since 1948.
Survivors include his wife, Edna of Portland; son, King County Superior Court Judge Charles W. Mertel of Seattle; brother, Col. Ken Mertel of Smithfield, Va.; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements: Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary,
Remembrances: Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children or the church.

"Jess Buchanan was a man with a firm belief in God, and he lived his life accordingly. He was not a person that would pass judgement on another person, nor did he ever speak unkind words of anyone. At family gatherings, grandpa always quoted a verse or verses from the Bible, and then he would pray. His faith in God was well known by all who knew him, it was this faith that helped him through his life.
Grandpa Buchanan was born in Trenton, Texas, but then him and his parents moved to Clyde, Texas. They eventually moved to Campo, Colorado. They arrived in Campo on February 6, 1915, grandpa's 9th birthday."
Note: The Social Security Death Index lists Shreveport, Caddo Co., Louisiana, as Jess' last place of residence. Daniel T. Shirley, Jr. says that Jess never lived in Shreveport.
