Mrs. Maria Catharine Schwartz died at the house of her son Reuben Schwartz in Mt. Joy township, with whom she had been living, on the 28th inst. The remains were buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, on Wednesday last, Rev. Dr. Mann, of Littlestown, officiating. The bearers were Henry Hake, David Conover, Nicholas Snyder and Uriah Spangler. Mrs. Schwartz was the wife of Jacob Schwartz who lived on the well known Schwartz farm, to the right of the Baltimore pike, about three miles from town, and who died in the spring of '63. She was one of those motherly women, a few of whom there are in the community, and was universally respected. She is survived by a family of eight children: Mrs. Sarah Weikert, of Cumberland township; Levi Schwartz, of Franklin; Mrs. Annie Allison, of Strahan; Samuel, David, John and Reuben, of Mountjoy, and Mrs. Lizzie Spangler, of Kansas.
Her age was 83 years and 29 days.

MRS SARAH M. WEIKERT
Mrs. Sarah M. Weikert, widow of Levi Weikert, died at the home ot her daughter, Mrs. George P. Black at 1:30 Saturday from kidney trouble aged 72 years, 11 months and 18 days.
Two sons and one daughter survive; Samuel D Weikert and Mrs. George P. Black, of Gettysburg: and Charles E. Weikert of Cumberland township. Two sisters and four brothers also survive. Mrs. Samuel Allison, of East Middle street: Mrs Lizzie Spangler, of Belle Plaine, Kansas; Samuel Swartz, David Swartz, John Swartz and Reuben Swartz, all of Mount Joy township. She was a member of Mt. Joy Lutheran church.
Funeral from her late home at 11 o'clock Tuesday morning.

GEORGE P. BLACK, DIES IN WARNER HOSPITAL FRIDAY; HAD BEEN ASST. POSTMASTER
George Perle Black, 84, 401 Baltimore St., for 27 years Gettysburg assistant postmaster and for the last seven years, Adams county court crier, died at 4:23 o'clock Friday afternoon in the Warner Hospital where he had been a patient for the last 24 days. The cause of death was monocystic leukemia.
Mr. Black was a former county school teacher, an active churchman for many years, a member of four Masonic orders, a past commander of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and a former Gettysburg school director and for 14 years secretary of the local school board.
He was born in Cumberland Twp., a son of the late William G. and Sarah M. (Witherow) Black. He attended the township schools and then went to private normal schools in Littlestown and Hanover during the summers while he taught school in the winter. He taught school for ten terms in rural sections of the county in Union, Cumberland and Mt. Joy Twps. he started teaching in the fall of 1894 at the age of 19 at Valley Grove School in Union Twp.
POST OFFICE CLERK
For two years after he married Miss Verna A. Weikert, of Cumberland Twp., on June 22 1901, he taught school and the resigned to accept a sub-clerkship in the Gettysburg pot office. He became a clerk on October 1, 1904, and moved up through the money order and register divisions to the assistant postmastership on January 1, 1919.
He was the local secretary of the Civil Service Board from 1906 until 1940 and held close to 150 Civil Service examinations for many types of positions. He was a member at large for many years in the United National Association of the Post Office Clerks and a member of the National Postal Supervisors Association. He retired as assistant postmaster here May 31 1945.
Since that time he had worker as a battlefield guide and was court crier in the Adams County courts since 1953. He once campaigned for the Republican nomination for representative in the General Assembly from this county.
SCHOOL DIRECTOR
The deceased was a Gettysburg school director from 1919 to 1928 and continued to serve as its secretary until 1934,
He was a member of the Good Samaritan lodge No. 336 of the Mason's, the Royal Arch chapter, Gettysburg Commandery No. 79 and of Zembo Shrine of Harrisburg. He had served the Gettysburg camp of the Sons of Union Veterans in various capacities, including commander.
Formerly a member of the Mr. Joy Lutheran Church, he had been a member of St. James Lutheran Church since 1904. He served in church council offices and many Sunday School posts including a four year term as superintendent. He served 22 years on the Church Council and was its secretary for 12 years and had also been its treasurer.
He was a synod delegate to three conventions of the United Lutheran Church in America at Omaha, Philadelphia and Baltimore. He had been a member of the board of trustees of the Tressler Orphan's Home at Loysville with 12 years. He was at various times both secretary and treasurer of that board.
FUNERAL ON MONDAY
Mr. Black was a director of the Gettysburg Building and Loan Association since 1927. After serving for 10 years as its secretary, he later became vice president and then its president.
His wife died May 31, 1958
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Sara Black Gideon at home, and a grandson, George William Gideon. One brother also survives, Irvin B. Black, Gettysburg R.1. There are a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services at the Bender Funeral Home, Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Paul L. Reaser, officiating. Internment in Evergreen Cemetery. friends may call at the funeral home Sunday evening from 7 to 9 o'clock.
GEORGE P. BLACK RETIRES APRIL 30: Pick Successor
George P. Black, a member of the local post office staff since 1904, and assistant postmaster since 1919, will officially retire from that position April 30, it was announced today.
Mr. Black announced last fall that he was going to retire, but later consented to continue in service until Spring.
Starting with the local post office on October 1, 1904, as a clerk under Civil Service, Mr. Black was made assistant postmaster January 1 1919. Before that time he served in the mail order and registered mail division. He was local secretary to the Civil Service board from January 1905 to January 1940. He was a member at Large for many years for the local office of the United National Association of Post office clerks and at present is a member of the National Postal Supervisors Assoociation.

GETTYSBURG- Sara B. Gideon, 82, of 54 South St., Gettysburg, died Monday, Nov. 28, 1988 at the Gettysburg Village Green Nursing Center.
Born in Gettysburg, she was a daughter of the late George and Verna Weikert Black. Her husband Delbert L. Gideon, died in 1944.
She was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church and the Eastern Star. She was a lieutenant in the US Navy and served during World War II. She was a 1927 graduate of Gettysburg College and a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.
She received a doctorate in 1956 from Penn State University. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She had been employed as a psychologist by the state of Delaware and for 42 years taught school in the Adams County area.
Surviving is a son, G. William Gideon of Gettysburg.
The memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. J. Stewart Hardy officiating. Private burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of other memorials, contributions may be made to the Adams County United Way.
