Dr. Harryet "Sandy" Weaver Smith, 81, a native of Saratoga, Texas and resident of Houma, died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011 in Terrebonne General Hospital after a brief illness.
She is survived by her mother, Annie Peak Weaver of Houma; sister, Barbara Weaver Schober of Houma; brother, George Edward Weaver and wife, Ada Whittington Weaver of Carencro; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Harry Joseph Weaver of Houma; and her grandparents, George and Margaret Peak, and Joseph and Alice Weaver of Texas.
"Sandy" was a 1948 graduate of Terrebonne High. She received her B.S. from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, where she was a Red Jacket, Cheerleader, assistant editor of the Vermillion, SLI Beauty, and a member of Delta Sigma Delta. She then taught physical education at Assumption High where she coached and sponsored the Jacket Club. After her marriage to Thomas J. Smith Jr., she taught at Istrouma High in Baton Rouge where she directed the Dance Club and co-directed a Children's theater; Houma Jr. High where she was co-director of the Drama Club; and Terrebonne High, during which time she received her MS from LSU. Then she taught at Carencro High where she also supervised student teachers from SLI. When they moved to New Jersey, she taught at Asbury Park High, then Monmouth College. During her stay at Monmouth in the '70's she was an Assistant Professor of Physical Education. She coached the Fencing team and acted as Men's Intramural Director in addition to her classes. During this time, she earned her P.h.D. at LSU. Dr. Smith returned to Houma in the '80s and taught Kindergarten, retiring after 20 years at East Houma Elementary School. Sandy enjoyed helping everyone and could be counted on to be there wherever and whenever she was needed by family and friends.
